If you haven’t read it do you plan to?
I hear it has a sort of Lost meets Lord of Flies sort of feel.

I think I will reserve judgment on Dawkin’s book or what he thinks of fantasy fiction until I get to read his book. I don’t really trust the telegraph’s information enough to have an opinion either way.

As far as the christian influences in Harry Potter, I really don’t see them. Harry didn’t (spoiler alert) win in the end because of faith in god or jesus, but because of his love for his friends and family. It is a kind of vague moral lesson that can be found in all religions, and even in the moral values of the nonreligious.

I forgot how much fun I have listening to intelligent and clean conversation about Harry Potter — yours is one of a few podcasts I don’t worry about having on while my kids are on the car. Harry Potter ends with harry killing voldermort. The Deathly Hallows are the cloak of invisibility,the resurrection stone and the Elder Wand. Voldermorts spell(Avada Kedavra!) bounced off harrys(expelliarmus!) and Voldermort dies.

ive just read that entry and i know what you feel like because the harry potter series changed a genration and it will contuineue to forever . readin that made me feel how grateful i am for these books from such a brillant , unique author who will never be replaced or forgotten , probley in a hundred years time , film directors will remake the films and people will feel how we do about it .

I loved your latest podcast and wanted to comment on your comment about the Draco/Harry storyline in the HBP movie. The black bird (evil) was released by Harry after his fight with Draco in the bathroom where he almost killed Draco. It was right after this that Draco finally let the death eaters into Hogwarts. On Pottercast’s review of the movie, they pointed out that Draco seems to have made up his mind after Harry almost killed him and I think it’s interesting that this is also when Harry released that bird.

I was reading these comments and what IF he made a horcrux for himself? Sorry, pretty late on this comment, but somebody just sent me the link. As you may or may not know, Dumbledore DID say, “I will only have truly left this school when none are loyal to me…” I haven’t read books 6, or 7 yet, so I can’t really say anything further, but I think it means he’s still alive. (Sorry if this makes no sense, I have a killer headache right now. D:)

The audiobook for Twilight is SO good. Ilyana Kadushin does an amazing job of reading it. Except for her Edward voice. I’m not a fan of that. I would check it out if you have a chance

Another great episode! I’ve finally been able to catch up on podcasts, school has been sucking up all of my time. Staying inline with the movie theme, a friend and I recently noticed that when HP movies are aired on ABC they usually include extended scenes that never made it to the theatrical version. I’ve also checked the DVD versions and they’re missing from there too! I’m not sure if there was some sort of deal with ABC and WB, but I’d really appreciate if they released these longer versions on DVD haha… not sure if either of you have noticed or know anything more about this.

Ok I finally saw the movie over the weekend and have a few comments to make.

I loved Snape as I knew I would but I am getting a little concerned how much older Alan Rickman is looking, remembering Snape is only meant to be 39ish.

I hated the way they portrayed Harry and Ginny, it was implied from the start so the getting together and the kiss were a bit of a non event. I loved how it was in the book where you never knew that Ginny felt the way Harry was feeling and when she ran into the room and kissed him in front of everyone was sorely missed.

I found myself having to explain to my husband who has never read the books that things had been changed,it was like I was apologising for something.

I felt Dumbledore’s death was kind of swept aside, it happened and then …. I would’ve much rather they had the battle at the end than most of the Ron and Lavender stuff, there was too much, it got boring by the end.

I loved Slughorn, I actually liked Hermione in this one, and I still can’t understand why they burnt down the burrow, just wasn’t needed IMO.

I enjoyed your review of the movie. I have only seen it once so far, but I have to say I really didn’t enjoy it. I left the movie thinking they could have done so much better. The one thing I was really looking forward to was Dumbledore’s funeral. I was so disappointed that there was no funeral. I’m interested to see what I think after I see it again. Although, like MidlifeMidwife, I will also buy it even though I was disappointed, just so I have the whole set.

My boyfriend is not a fan of the series, but he listens when I talk about it (as long as I listen about cars and video games. lol). I was complaining about the movie to him and how I was severely disappointed with the exclusion of the funeral, and he suggested that maybe they would include it in the first Deathly Hallows movie. I so hope he is right! The funeral showed how important Dumbledore was to everyone, with all of the characters we have met before and new introductions to ones we would come to know better in Deathly Hallows coming to Hogwarts to pay their respects. Hopefully they will be able to pay tribute to Dumbledore in the next installment. This wait had better be worth it!

I enjoyed your review of HBP. I’m a 54 year old woman with a manic obsession of Harry Potter. My home office contains a very extensive collection of HP memorabilia. It is hard to find people to talk to as there are few in my world who care very much. I’m trying to raise my grandkids to have an appreciation of this good literature.

Many of the podcasts are just silly, but your podcast and Travis Prinzi’s are very intelligent and I enjoy them immensely.

Penny, you couldn’t put your finger on what it is about Michael Gambon’s portrayal that isn’t quite right. In my opinion, he may be a fine actor but he just isn’t Dumbledore. Dumbledore is circumspect, polite, wise, and unflappable. Gambon just does not portray those characteristics. I came to my own conclusion that Jim Dale would be the best Dumbledore so when you said it I cheered. He does it perfectly.

Keep up the good work.
