In this week’s episode, we finished our discussion on the theme of emotion in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. We talked about the Dementors and their effect on the soul, as well as their antidote: the Patronus, and the necessary requirements to conjure one. This was actually an off the cuff, un-planned discussion and we really like what we came up with (not to toot our own horns).

Episode #71: Patterns in Potter – Lost in Emotion

In this week’s episode we started our discussion on the prevailing theme in Prisoner of Azkaban: Emotions. Between the Aunt Marge debacle, the werewolf in his midst, the various animals and animaguses (I never learned how to pluralize that) in the book, and time travel, Harry was forced to learn the importance of keeping his emotions in check.

We plan on interviewing Dr. Jeffrey Rudski this week to talk about Harry Potter Addiction and we hope to have that on the next episode.

Episode #53: The Making of a Wizard – The Story of Neville Longbottom

One of our most favorite characters from the Harry Potter series is the one and only Neville Longbottom. From a shy, sheepish kid in the first book, to Snake-Killer, Neville goes through one of the most noticeable transformations of any other character in the book. In this episode, we take a look back at Neville, the significant moments in his life, both before and at Hogwarts, and how he progressed from less than a wizard to a full-fledged Wizard Hero. In particular, we examine how J.K. Rowling uses Neville to show how cultures and societies reinforce images of acceptable traits and tacitly punish or stigmatize those that fail to embody those traits; also, we discuss Neville’s character as a mirror of Harry’s character.

I had to resist the urge to entitle this episode “Neville Longbottom: From Zero to Hero.”

Episode #23: Going Back in Time

One of the cardinal rules of any story, be it in movie or book form, is that once you introduce time travel, all bets are off. Once you start to “bend-a time and space,” you can do pretty much anything. Of course, if you do it right, this makes for a great story. But beware the paradoxes of time travel, such as the predestination paradox. To whit: how could Harry save himself from the Dementors, if, if not for Harry himself, he would have died? It’s enough to tie your brain in a knot, but there might just be a way out. In this episode, we do our best to outline two different theories of time travel, and discuss which one best fits with the events of Book 3. It gets a bit confusing at times, fortunately, you can always rewind the podcast and listen to it again!
