Episode #71: Patterns in Potter – Lost in Emotion
In this week’s episode we started our discussion on the prevailing theme in Prisoner of Azkaban: Emotions. Between the Aunt Marge debacle, the werewolf in his midst, the various animals and animaguses (I never learned how to pluralize that) in the book, and time travel, Harry was forced to learn the importance of keeping his emotions in check.
We plan on interviewing Dr. Jeffrey Rudski this week to talk about Harry Potter Addiction and we hope to have that on the next episode.
We got some great listener comments from Rosie and Victoria. We now have a number for you to call in the US if you want to send us voicemails. You can call 206-337-0357and in the UK, please call 07092 899490. As always, please leave your comments as close to one minute as possible.
It is a new month so don’t forget to vote for us on Podcast Alley(the link makes it *really* easy for you)!
Finally, if you downloaded this episode before Monday morning March 3- 9am EST, you downloaded the unedited version which we put up on iTunes by mistake. There aren’t any good bloopers in it or anything, just a bunch of ums, you knows and throat clears. Also, the mp3 comments are not inserted. So go ahead and re-download the episode. We apologize for the inconvenience.
In the news:
- Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson made EW’s 30 under 30 list. In a related story, we made EW’s Over 30 and Overweight list.
- It turns out that JK Rowling doesn’t *really* use Myspace. Shoot, now I have to figure out who I have been trying to get to read my fanfiction.
- Update on JKR/WB lawsuit against SVA/RDR. ROFL. Not really but I wanted to feel part of the whole *initials* thing.
You can listen to the episode using the player below, or download it directly as an mp3.

If magi is the plural of magus, I’d say animagi is the plural of animagus. But my Latin is somewhat limited. I did well at memorizing the verb tenses but the noun declensions were wicked.
March 3rd, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Ow those awful neverending list of declensions, I could never wrap my mind around them in school. That’s why I horribly failed in Latin, Greek, French and German….
I use animagi. I thought it was animagi in the books too, although no direct reference comes to mind.

I’m sleepy so I promise to comment more when I am somewhat more coherent. Just wanted to say loved the intro music. Family thought I was playing Guitar Hero.
March 3rd, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Is it just me, or did other people not hear Victoria’s comment?
March 3rd, 2008 at 12:59 pm
This is Penny. but no, it isn’t just you Rosie- for some reason Victoria’s comments are not working right now in the podcast. I just downloaded them again but when I tried to import them into garageband they didn’t work. We are going to try to figure this out. This episode has been one thing after the other. Greatest apologies to everyone especially Victoria.
March 3rd, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Thanks but not necessary. The funny thing is, I downloaded the episode through iTunes and I heard neither comments. Not mine nor Rosie’s. Obviously I know what I said, but still would like to hear what Rosie said
March 3rd, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Probably superfluous advice, but have you checked whether all tracks are turned on ? Some might have been muted while mixing down….
March 3rd, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Victoria- If you re download it you should at least be able to hear what Rosie said (and some of the edits I made). Yes, all tracks were turned on. I got a message that your file was not available. I sent it all over to greg who is going to retry from his computer.
I really enjoyed your comment so I am pretty annoyed with this situation. If we don’t get it on this week’s episode, I would at least hope to get it on next week’s (or maybe you can send a new comment that we’ll make sure to put up). I am quite frustrated with this episode.
March 3rd, 2008 at 3:14 pm
i think animagus is like moose you dont plurulize it
March 3rd, 2008 at 3:37 pm
This will seem really random but i just wanna say ive just started listening to the podcast a few weeks back after my official coming out as a Harry Potter fan! I long denied and avoided the books but im now re-reading them and enjoying them emmensly (i cannot spell that word!). Your podcast is one of very few which are both informitive and enjoyable to listen to. A pleasure!! And since Ugly Betty, Prison Break and Sugar Rush are over its on of few things I have to look forward too!!
Keep up the good work!
March 3rd, 2008 at 5:46 pm
I have to agree with DeeDee, I always look forward to the next episode. All of Sunday I was checking up here and on iTunes to see if it was out yet. And DeeDee, congraulations on reading the books. I find that once they start, very few people can resite them. So Welcome to Harry Potter fandom. (sorry about spelling)
March 3rd, 2008 at 5:47 pm
I just remembered I wanted to ask, is there a voicemail number for Canada?
March 3rd, 2008 at 5:56 pm
Austin- I like that!!
DeeDee- Welcome! Thanks so much for the kind words. Please stick around and join in the conversation.
Rosie- I think the same long distance rates apply from Canada. You can definitely call, it will just cost money (as it will cost money for those out side the 206 area code).

by the way new the office is back on it was on last thursday
March 3rd, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Penny, it could also be animagi. I have an ever expanding list of questions to ask Jo if I ever get around to writing to her, and I will just have to add that one!
March 3rd, 2008 at 7:00 pm
sorry that last one did not make sense. I just wanted to say that the office was back last week and its new. try checking it out on nbc.com

Penny, Revgeorge, Rosie – The plural of is Animagi. I looked it up in Prisoner of Azkaban.
Page 260, UK Children’s Paperback, Chapter eighteen: Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs:
‘I sometimes felt guilty about betraying Dumbledore’s trust, of course…he had admitted me to Hogwarts when no other Headmaster would have done so, and he had no idea that I was breaking the rules he had set down for my own and other’s safety. He never knew I had led three other students into becoming Animagi illegally. But I always managed to forget my guilty feelings every time we sat down to plan our next month’s adventure. And I haven’t changed…’

March 3rd, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Wow. I am so glad I have all of you to do the hard work for me. thanks, Victoria
March 3rd, 2008 at 10:29 pm
if I am not mistaken in the interview of Jo by the podcasters who-must-not-be-named Jo said that she had considered Horcrii as the plural of Horcrux but since there was already Animgi she went for Horcruxes instead
March 3rd, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Is there any way you could pass that technical glitch that muted Victoria off to Greg?
March 3rd, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Hmmm, like I didn’t try that already?!?
March 4th, 2008 at 12:03 am
actually now that i think about it maybe it was Inferi that Jo mentioned…. or both….. or neither….. oh Confundus
March 4th, 2008 at 7:54 am
hahahaha, it’s great to see that comment sections always have such coherent discussions
March 4th, 2008 at 10:10 am
Shimon, it seems as if you are under the effects of memory charm…but a very bad one!
March 4th, 2008 at 10:34 am
I haven’t been able to listen to the podcast yet, but I was wondering if I could send you an email with some questions about podcasting, so I can do a presentation on it in my class. We’re having to do a presentation over a topic with an interview, so I thought, what better than podcasting?
:]
Thanks.
- Maya
March 4th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Maya- Absolutely! Do you have our e-mail address?
March 4th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
just listened to the podcast. It was really good. I really wish that I could hear victorias comment but it was still good!
March 4th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
whatch the new office this week
March 4th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Hey Penny and Greg, I have a question, more of an inquiry if you will. You two (brilliant!) podcasters continue saying “If you think Harry Potter is just for kids, think again!” Well, you’re adults, and you just interviewed an adult, so why don’t you interview a kid? I’m 14 years old, I have a mic for my laptop, I’ve been considering starting a podcast of my own, but I’d really like to join in on one first. So while I get a feel for podcasting, you guys can interview a Harry Potter fanatic who’s actually a kid and not an adult. I’d really like to help and I believe that I could totally benefit HP Progs.
March 4th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Good Idea Crews! I’m 13 and I would love to be on a podcast, and be able to actually discuss things people, not just talk! I mean it’s great to comment, but it would be great to actually do a whole show! I use a iMac, and it has a built in mic, so please, think about it!
March 4th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Thanks Rosie.
So Penny and Greg, if you guys think this is a good idea, totally email me at zclagrand@gmail.com. It would be awesome to be apart of HP Progs for once.
March 4th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Please, please, please *puppy dog eyes*. You could do a segment where you interveiw a HP fan who isn’t an adult, or every few episodes you could have guest. I would come as often as you would let me and I had time to record with you! If you want me to contact me it’s rosiec@nb.sympatico.ca
March 4th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
I think Rosie and Crews should consult and do a (short 3-4 minute) clip together- as 13 and 14 year olds and send it to us….what does everyone else think?
March 4th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Sounds good to me. I have Skype, so recording wouldn’t be a problem, though I would have to learn how to record with another person. I’m used to using Audacity, so it would be something new for me. I’m up for it if Rosie is.
March 4th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Penny -
Actually I kinda sorta lost it.
o.o
March 4th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
I’d love to!
March 4th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
maya= harrypotterprogs at yahoo dot com I don’t know WHY we don’t have it on this website. That is ridiculous. Who runs this thing?!?
March 4th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
*coughyoucough*
March 5th, 2008 at 7:13 am
Penny-
Thanks, except an email around 940ish this morning.

March 5th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
It is animagi Lupin says it in Chapter 18 of Azkaban
March 5th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
I just woke up and had a Harry Potter question in my head. So I figured I’d ask the experts. So far the patterns series has discussed 2.5 books. In these 1st three books I cannot remember anyone being killed. Not talked about in passive sense but an actual murder death. I guess Quirriel in book one disintergrated but other than that has anyone died in the story to this point? Is Cedrick the first that we see murdered at the end of GOF or am I missing something?
March 5th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Aaron, Barty Crouch, Sr. is murdered before Cedric in GoF, but I think it’s accurate to say that Cedric’s is the first death we really experience as readers, and I think that’s quite purposeful on Rowling’s part. The end of GoF is where Rowling starts to tear down her stock fairy tale hero, and watching a death is the first key step in having that happen.
Greg and Penny, interesting stuff in this one, particularly with the reflections on animals; I’m looking forward to the rest of the PoA discussion. I think “scapegoating” would work well as an alternative organizing theme for PoA, a theme which sort of carries throughout the rest of the series. I’m planning to do a podcast on scapegoating in PoA soon.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Hey guys, I’m a huge fan of the show! Very interesting discussion this week, I totally agree about the time travel thing and not being able to alter the past. I recently started my own podcast and you guys have definitly been an inspiration!
March 6th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
HI Katrina! Thanks for the kind words. We’d be happy to plug your podcast on our show- send us the info.
March 6th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Penny- Really?!? That would be great! I’ll send you the info ASAP.
March 9th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
This is really interesting because I never thought of emotions being the main theme for PoA. I was thinking of dread being the theme, if you can even call it a “theme.” Emotions I always associated with OoTP. What do you guys say is the theme of OoTP?
P.S: I only heard Rosie’s comment, not Victoria’s.
