I must say that I agree with you Penny. Yes, he is integral to the series and there are still many layers to this character that we may never know about. However, his treatment of other students, especially Hermione, completely excludes him from receiving any sympathy from me. Even Dumbledore's treatment of Snape did not create a soft spot in me for Snape, although it did create more of an understanding within me for his "situation."

Then again, Alan Rickman makes me completely love Snape. So I guess there are two sides to every sickle, yeah?

(Thanks for posting this! Make sure you send in your valentine's day shout out!)

I agree with you Shimon that his comment to Tonks was cruel and unsympathetic but maybe it was more a comment towards himself for his own "weak" patronus, because all though his love for Lily was what seemed to drive him, it was also his downfall and I believe his intelligence would've told him how "weak" a man he was as his life became all about his weakness for love.

Maybe he meant it as a warning, warning her not to get into a similar situation that he found himself in, and if you look at it in the end she did, her love for Remus may have well led to her own death.

Hmmm I could find an excuse for Snape for everything if I wanted to, I feel the need to protect him. Don't worry I always have a sensitivity for the underdog character in books, Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility, Eponine in Les Miserables.

I only have one problem with Snape. It is not even related to his treatment of Harry or the other students. I think it is a quite revealing moment that speaks volumes about his true character.

In the beginning of HBP he ridicules Tonks for her "weak" patronous. At that moment we don't even realize that of all people he is actually the only one who knows exactly what it means. He is nonetheless cruel and completely unsypathetic.

Personally, Snape is like my favorite character.
But that's just me.
I'll have to listen to it in the morning.

Don't want to turn this into a whole Snape good/bad discussion, but I guess I forgive Snape a little on the whole snarky teacher role as I look at it as a role he was forced into, I don't think if he had had a choice he would've choosen teaching as a profession, it was something that got him out of bad situation and into a worse one. Don't forget potions was not his choice.

I am snape-neutral. Like I said, I agree with Rachael that Snape is the lynchpin of the series but I still can't say that he is a good guy. He is a complex and fascinating character but anyone who treats students the way he does is an abusive teacher, in my opinion.
