Deathly Hallows to be Split into Two Movies?

Rumors are circulating that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be made into not one, but two movies.  Sources say the reasons are artistic and practical, and not aimed at squeezing more money out of the franchise.

We’ll update with any new information, so stay tuned.

Hmm. It may not be a terrible idea, but I don’t know if they could pull it off as two totally independent parts of the series. Maybe a “Deathly Hallows” in two volumes, filmed together and released in a relatively short span of time.

    (So I don’t watch them, I can still have opinions! :-) )

  2. penny Says:

They did that with LOTR, right?

  3. revgeorge Says:

Kill Bill vol 1 & Kill Bill vol 2, Penny, is what I think you’re thinking of. LOTR was three books to begin with so they kind of had to break it up into three movies.

  4. penny Says:

I know it was three books, but I think that maybe they filmed the second and third movie at the same time. Correct me if I am wrong. Matrix also, correct?

  5. Michal Says:

No, but they did rearrange some of the storyline, and they are expanding “The Hobbit” into two movies.

  6. Michal Says:

Oh, and they filmed all of Lord of the Rings more or less simultaneously. I don’t think it would be all that difficult for DH.

  7. Mizz Andy Says:

I think I would prefer a 3 – 3 1/2 hour movie rather than two, but I suppose to do it accurately without missing anything, two movies might be the way to go. I only hope the other part of the rumour involving Spielberg is wrong, I’m all for Peter Jackson but his schedule is pretty much full.

As for the Hobbit, the talk here is that they will do one film based on the book and a second one that will tie the book to LOTR, so therefore something made up. No word on the scriptwriters yet, but I don’t think it will be Peter, Fran and Phillipa.

  8. Shimon Says:

I kinda like the idea but i’m having a hard time figuring out where they think they are going to split it. I don’t really see any satisfying exit point at which to stop and teak a break.

  9. Greg Says:

Lord of the Rings was originally written as a single book; it was only divided up into smaller books to make it easier to sell and consume.

  10. revgeorge Says:

Yes, LOTR was filmed all at once, but I think for time purposes they had to break it up into separate movies & it was more logically consistent to break it into the three movies corresponding to the three books. Although Greg is right, Tolkien always considered it to be one book & if I remember right, didn’t like it being broken up.

  11. revgeorge Says:

Have they been doing the Chronicles of Narnia films all at once or not? I remember seeing the trailer for Prince Caspian & noting that Georgie Henley looked significantly older than in LWW.

  12. Michal Says:

The more I think about this, the more I wonder if it might not be a really solid idea. Imagine if they end the first half right after the escape from Gringotts– the whole film would be a streamlined hunt for the Horcruxes, not a rushed chase culminating in battle. And think of the Battle of Hogwarts, Snape’s tale, King’s Cross, the final duel between Harry and Voldemort, the aftermath, and the Epilogue as one cohesive film, given the space it needs instead of being crammed into the end of the film– I think the possibilities are pretty spectacular, really.

  13. Joye Beth Says:

I think 2 movies sounds like a really good idea, I can see it working very well… and maybe it won’t make me as mad as the other movies with their lack of detail.

As far as Spielberg goes, I would be pleased if he took it on… but I rather like Guillermo del Toro. What he did with Pan’s Labyrinth was magical, and I also love his work with The Devil’s Backbone (I’m also wanting to see his new movie, but I haven’t scraped up the fundage yet lol)

  14. The Pensieve Horcrux Says:

I like the idea that they might cut the film into two movies. Also I’m curious where to cut it. I’m with Michal that a good point to do it would be after they escape from gringotts and they fly off on the dragon. My theory of why they may do it is that as much as is in DH everyone including me was worried that they may need to cut too much. With it being two movies, lets say 2 and 1/2 hours long a piece then they can elaborate on things that they might have normally skipped over. Like the grave of Ignotus or the fight with Lupin. I just think that splitting it will give it a chance to e what the book is and not just a movie that stands by itself. Like some of the other HP movies are.

  15. Ashley Says:

This idea makes me even more excited to see DH than before! I would much rather pay double the money to see a movie (or movies in this case) that does the book justice than to only pay half and be left feeling disappointed, like I was after OOTP.

  16. austin Says:

    they should do it

  17. Brent Says:

Does any suggestions where the split in Deathly Hallows should be made?

  18. Brent Says:

Sorry, change “Does any suggestions” to “Does anyone have any suggestions”

  19. Michal Says:

Well, I mentioned earlier that I think a good place to break would be right after the escape from Gringotts, with the trio soaring away on the dragon. (Harry could even say something like, “Four down, three to go.” Except less cheesy. Hopefully.) That way, all the adventure and chase prior to this would have space to be developed properly, and the drama and complexities of everything that follows would have enough time to be fully explained, rather than jammed on and look like one gigantic deus ex machina.

  20. Mizz Andy Says:

I agree with Michal after the escape from Gringotts would be great as it would give a climax that that movie with the whole escaping and battleing to get out with the dragon. I just really want to make sure all the Snape scenes are included.

  21. Annie Says:

It sounds like a good idea now that I think about it a bit. As long as they get all the details in there, I’m fine with it. The lack of detail/taking out some of the scenes that I was looking fowawrd to was the one thing that absolutely drove me crazy on a couple of the movies. It would be something new to mix it up, and hopefully do the final book justice.

  22. Brent Says:

Sorry Michal, my computer is being stupid and I didn’t see your post earlier. I think that’s a brilliant spot to break the movie and you made good points about how the first movie would be more of a horcrux hunt and the second half would be the battle to take down voldemort.

  23. Raymond Says:

Have just re-read Deathly Hallows a third time (!!), I personally believe it’s a good idea to split the book into two movies. The storyline is -extremely- complex, to say the least. I’d split the movie right at this point (SPOILER WARNING!): when Ron destroys the Horcrux that was Slytherin’s locket, the end of the chapter “The Silver Doe.”

  24. The Pensieve Horcrux Says:

First off Raymond, it is January I think we could do without the spoiler warning. Next i never thought of stopping it there. I think that it will just depend on what they leave in and how it is going to be shot and then see where it needs to be cut. Although by the time we will get to that point we will see it in theaters. So as of right now I am going to say that I am going to think about it and reply after I figure out the best place.

  25. Frankie Gouge Says:

I think that Dobby’s death would be a wonderfully sentimental place to end the first movie, then start the second movie with the action-packed breakup to Gringotts.

  26. Victoria Says:

Yeah, that’s what I was goin g to say, right after the Malfoy Manor !

  27. Katie Says:

I agree with splitting it when Dobby dies because thats a powerful moment for Harry and it really gives him the kick of motivation he needed at that point to avenge his parents and kill Voldemort. I think it would be a fantastic because when he looks over the sea he could have a determined, heartbroken but brave expression and then you see him on the cliff edge and him silouetted in the sunset and the credits would neatly fade in and i would be like “NOOOO!” and desperate to see more. It would have me on the edge of my seat and dying to see the next film. What do you think? xxx

  28. Kora Hodges Says:

Omg i love that! That sounds magical & heartbreaking. I would be constanly on the edge of my seat because that would mean the second movie of DH would be all the action packed stuff! including the gringotts break-in, battle of hogwarts, snapes memorys and the part when Harry rids of Voldemort! I ♥ HP.
