Prophecy Day 2
Prophecy Day 2 proved to be as good as Day 1. Here is the rundown.
Day 2 started at 11:59 pm (well technically 10 pm, but we’ll get into that in a bit) when we went to hear the Leaky Mug Podcast. By “we”, obviously, I mean Greg and Me. By Greg and Me, obviously I DON’T mean my husband, Greg and me. Fortunately for me, Greg in Toronto was here (obviously, I mean, we are IN Toronto after all) and he had an interest in going to the podcast as well. What was crazy was that we had to line up for TWO hours before the podcast started just to get in. That was a bit crazy. They had us sitting like 3rd graders in a HOT corridor waiting, waiting, and waiting. While it was fun to watch kids from the various houses chair themselves on (I seem to remember Gryffindor and Hufflepuff being the loudest), the wait was a bit ridiculous. But, Greg in T and I were able to keep busy by discussing old Canadian TV (specifically, “You Can’t Do That on Television” and “Today’s Special”- two awesome awesome shows from my childhood) and asking various HP related situation questions, i.e., what would your patronus be (mine would be an animal that is both insightful and lazy and Greg would be some kind of bird) and what class would you like at Hogwarts (we both agreed History of Magic as long as it wasn’t taught by Prof. Binns).
We finally got into the podcast at midnight(ish) and were pretty close to the back of the room. The folks from Leaky and Muggle did a good job and the crowd went CRAZY. At one point I turned to Greg and said, “do you realize, this is about a BOOK?!?” That was pretty amazing. Anyway, the podcast was definitely an experience and I am (pretty) glad I stayed up for it.
Today was filled with more sessions, although I will say that I was able to sleep in until 11 am and that was fantastic. Here is the roundup:
titled, “Harry Potter’s Hero’s Journey: In His World and Our’s.” Connie is a very dynamic speaker and I enjoyed this.
There is PLENTY more to talk about but I am too exhausted to keep typing.
In the meantime, check out today’s National Post article, titled, “Hogwarts Heaven” where I was interviewed.
Talk to you soon,
Penny

Great quote Penny!
I can’t wait to hear all about the sessions in future podcasts.
I do listen to some of those other podcasts, so I’ll look forward to hearing the one attended by Penny and Greg in Toronto, but I only comment on y’all’s .

You don’t know how jealous I am to hear you talk about all these cool events at Prophecy! I (currently) have a job that requires me to work weekends so I never get to go these conferences. It makes me sad because by the time I might be able to go to one (next year), it won’t be the same. Anyway, thanks for updating the HP Progs blog with the Toronto happenings. It almost makes me feel like I’m there… well not really but I can pretend. WAH! Have fun!

Hey y’all! Prophecy was a blast, just as Penny has described it all. The talks were amazing and there was just such an astounding feeling of community- it was like we were all speaking the same language.
Hmmm… highlights… Travis Prinzi’s first talk on the deconstruction of the wizarding world was EXCELLENT as well as the one on Alfonso Cuaron’s vision of Harry Potter- it was great to talk to the speaker afterwards about what we loved about the PoA movie and how Cuaron has made his mark by leaving his visual touchstones on the films that came after. I also went to a round table discussion on “Magical Ethics” where we talked about things like the Unforgiveable curses and the morality of Harry using Imperio and Crucio in Deathly Hallows… good discussion, and there are A LOT of people out there who know their canon and know how to intellectually distill Rowling’s text into some interesting debates, it was just so awesome.
There were also so MANY people done up in costume- sometimes in robes (thereby reflecting their house allegiance) and others chose to emulate their favourite characters- there were a couple of Umbridges running about the place, and I got a great picture with a pair dressed up as Hagrid and Professor Trelawney- it was fantastic. I have to mention there was a lady who dressed up as Mrs. Black who had her own portrait frame and everything. She had set herself up in the corridor, frme and all, outside some of the conference rooms and started shouting out put-downs to the crowd calling passers by mudbloods and traitors of filth. I certainly didn’t expect to come to this conference to be berated by Mrs. Black, but I must say it was pretty brilliant and all in good fu

LOL… my last word on my last post was “fun”. Anyhoo, I loved the prophecy experience and I am so glad that I got a chance to finally meet Penny and Greg- they are an awesome couple and it was nice spending time with them at the various lectures and the LeakyMug podcast (thank you Penny for sacrificing sleep and waiting to get in to the event with me!!). We also did a book swap- I finally got my copy of the U.S. edition of Deathly Hallows (which was still mintly enclosed within the amazon shipping box and wrapped as a present!!) and I gave Penny a copy of the Can. edition which is identical to the UK Children’s edition. We have done more for Canadian-U.S. relations in that one moment than our own leaders have done in decades- it was great!! Thanks again to Penny and Greg for enriching my experience at Prophecy and giving a great Podcast presentation!

Thank you guys so much for the detailed description! I live in europe so i can’t go to any of the conventions I’ve been hearing so much about.
Listening to your podcast made me feel like i was there!

I found this entry purely by accident, and was so pleased to see that, not only did Greg attend my presentation, he really enjoyed as well! Thank you for the positive mention, and I’m thrilled to read an account from someone else who had a fantastic time at Prophecy!

Venessa- will you be going to portus and/or presenting there? I submitted 2 proposals for round tables so we’ll see what happens, but we will be there and taking part in their “Podcast Palooza.”

I’m certainly going to try to be Portus as a representative of SpellCast, albeit I won’t be presenting. I hope your roundtables get accepted!
