Only just decided after all this time to offer a comment. When all the seven Harrys and six of their protectors arrived at the Burrow, the aurors were insisting on security questions being answered. Then Arthur burst in, demanding to see George, refusing to bother with the security stuff. Am I the only one who spent most of the book waiting for this to become significant? It was very out-of-character behaviour for Arthur Weasley, and I was sure it all meant that he was someone sinister posing as AW. Of all the things that disappointed me about the book, that disappointed me the most (even more than tragically only finding out Snape was actually a hero after he'd been bumped off - I really hated that). Having said all that the book shaped up better than I feared, and I LOVED Hermione Granger's handbag - I want one!

BTW...am I the only one who noticed that it was a little bit ironic that it was HP progs podcast #42 when you discussed the ultimate answers to Harry Potter's life, his universe, and everything?

i loved this book lots. definately not my favourite tho.
there were a few things i wish had happened.

-i definately wish Neville had killed Bellatrix, after all the stuff that happened to his parents, nd all the confidence Neville had build up i thought it was reli disappointing for Mrs Weasly to do it, she had no real grudge against her like Neville.

-I also agree that Snape's death should have been more heroic, especially after you find out he has been good all along, and for him to die jst so Voldermort can hav the wand ( that dusnt even work properly for him!) was quite anticlimatic. But i did think that harry namin his son after him definately celebrated Snape, and that was reli sweet.

-Although this may sound kinda morbid, i do wish more main characters had died, maybe even Harry. But JK said that 2 main people were to die, so i expected a pupil to die, i admit Snape was a main character, but his death was not a dramatic, the onli death that got to me was Dobby's nd he had a small part.

Ne way before I complain too much, i want to say that i did love the book, and all wells that ends well.

Can anyone offer an explanation as to how Neville was able to retrieve the Sword of Gryffindor? My recollection is that the Goblin took it from Harry, Ron & Hermione after they broke into Gringotts.

i'm liking your podcasts. in this one you were pondering about the cover of the book. it is the final duel between harry and voldemort. harry just disarmed voldemort and is reaching to grab the elder wand. harry should have a wand in his right hand but i think no wands are shown just for an added sense of mystery. they're shapes of figures in the background and you can see the sun coming up in the enchanted roof of the great hall. so yeah, you seem slightly unsure so just letting you know :)

Why is the epilogue set 19 years later? The various children of Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione are at most about 13, right? So there's about 4-5 years where the two couples were clearly in love, but did not have children (and maybe weren't even married). Did they have to wait until they were 21 or 22 before they could get married? Could this be a subtle moralizing about not getting married too early?

Penny's Mum you are too cute.
I thought the same with the open endedness of the epilogue, there are either 19 years before or the kids story after if she ever decides to revisit the wizarding world.
Was just watching a video on youtube and decided that for the final film when Harry walks down to the forest they need a proper song, not just instrumental. How moving would that be? Harry's song?

I too am hooked...thanks to my daughter and son in law. I totally agree with Andy and Jeff in their comments. I think J.K. was writing a lot of the action scenes for Hollywood (that was my impression as I was reading it). I think her first book was a lot tamer, if I remember correctly (before the movies came out). It's not criticism, just a statement.
The second thing is, I think the epilogue leaves room for her or anyone else to write a "spin-off" series..."Harry Potter - the next generation" with Harry maybe as the new Headmaster of Hogwarts (or a professor) focusing on the children mentioned in the epilogue...and the things they get into..with references of course to their parents and what transpired for them over the 7 books in this series. Just my prediction for the future...take it or leave it. (Penny, I've been trying to get in touch all day to discuss the book since I finished the book early this morning, but to no avail..so I decided to comment instead).

Sorry I haven't commented. I got my book and started reading at 12:22am on Saturday. (I got my book at Wal-mart and there were hardly any people there, and I got it at 12:01am) I finished at 7:58pm on Saturday. Yay. I loved the book. I cried for the last several chapters, and when Hedwig and Dobby died. I didn't go into hysterics until about an hour hafter I finished and I was taking a shower. The I decided I needed alone time and somehow I managed to book a small trip to the beach. I thought about the book for the whole time there. I am NOT going to discuss the actual book now, because, well, there's just so much to say.

Andy: Snape is good, but Bella is not. How about Luna or Molly?

Susan RL: I think she can get the PG13 label. Americans are hung up on sex, they don't give an R unless there's a breast involved.

LONG LIVE DOBBY! His spirit shall never die!

Jeff: I think that it would be great to have the movies be double features. It would mean great concessions for the theaters. Great idea! OOTP would have been much better as a two-part movie. We didn't have any quiddich, they always take out the funny bits for the movies.

Jeff - interesting you should say that as I couldn't help but see the book as a movie while I read it. I thought at the time it was because I had just seen OOTP and the characters were so fresh in my mind, but I am re reading it at the moment and agree, JK seems to have had the movies in mind. Lets hope they make her the scriptwriter for the last one. I would love it if it was a two parter as I can't see them leaving anything out. I also would love to see Peter Jackson direct.

Two quick comments: the book really seemed as though it was written to be a movie (tons of action scenes). Also, should the movie be a two-parter?

Ok, so it took a big longer than it took everyone else to read, but this book was extremely emotional for me. Unfortunately, I have not been a part of the fandom for as long as most and my heart is broken that this is the end, my heart broke a little being at the Barnes & Noble just receiving the book. While there were several things that I felt were left to the imagination, this book covered most of the basis and I enjoyed how she used a "check list" and revisiting tons of different themes from the previous books.

I would like to have seen more of Hogwarts and the characters and I would like to have known more about the Ministry of Magic, and I like others would like to know how George got along with Fred. J.K. Rowling certainly may make it difficult for the movie ratings people to maintain the PG-13 rating, ahhhhh certainly the "Master of Death", while I am sooo happy the trio made it out, my heart was hurting through the whole thing.

Ahhh, I totally agree, Cricketoh, I really loved Dobby and I feel as though he was truly a hero and a totally awesome character.

Hmmm, as awesome of a wizard as Snape was, even though he was a poop head for most of the books/movies and I feel great about his character now, I feel as though his death should have been so much more than it was.

While I feel like I learned a lot about everything, I feel like I wanted to learn so much more, but alas, we have reached the end.

I submitted this back in March '07 (I think) on the HPProgs forum:

                            ---------------------------

The Death of a House Elf
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think Dobby will cross over in some self-sacrifice for Harry and company. He was a minor character with a major role in many of the books, and has had an impact on the education and advancement of Harry as a wizard. JKR has spent a lot of time developing him as a character, and his death, especially a noble one, will not cause an uproar in the loyal fandom of the Potter series as will, say the death of Hagrid or Ginny/Ron/Hermione; thus she can do it and still not worry about the backlash (see Star Trek: The search for Spock).

I can see it now....The little casket......six pack of butter beer........

                        ----------------------------------------

So, forgive me if I'm going a little over the top with Dobby; I just like him.
I think there should be a future podcast dedicated to him (and/or others that died from the "Good Side"). I am currently trying to find the perfect item concerning him to send for JK's thank you book.

I disagree Aaron:

Smile for Dobby; he went from lifelong slave to freedom and now (IMHO) a true classic hero.....He represented everything that was right by displaying true loyalty and honor. He stood up to the people he feared most while saving this true friends (without hesitation or fear). He should be honored and remembered as a warrior because he sacrificed the thing most precious to him - his freedom - to save Harry and the others. He never desired power or a better wand or a stone to bring back the dead. He only wanted to look after his friend. I cheer for his bravery, I salute his dedication, and I will remember him most for his undeniable contribution to Harry's success.......

Smile for Dobby......He desires it!

Oops! Also, I think the cover is the scene where the killing curse is rebounded onto Voldemort and the wand is thrown. I just don't know why there aren't any wands in the picture, though.

I was frustrated with a few unanswered questions I'd love to hear you address. Listed below (mostly epilogue concerns):
-Was Percy supposed to be headmaster?
-What are the trio's careers?
-What happened to the Dursleys?
-What happened to Kreacher?
-I heard that she was to explain why some people became ghosts, but didn't catch it anywhere...did I miss it?
-James, Lily, Albus Severus, where's little Sirius?
-What was the crying baby in the scene with Dumbledore? Am I dense or did that throw anyone else off?

SO MANY THINGS TO SAY!!!

I finished yesterday and have been speechless ever since. A few thoughts though:

It's been common knowledge since 2000 that Jo was most likely going to do a HP Encyclopedia for charity and give us all the backstory she's ever had. So never fear, fellow HP fans, all the little questions will be answered in due time. :-)

Suzanne: the whole takeover of Hogwarts, the MOM and Azkaban reminded me of the Night of the Long Knives during Hitler's reign also! And, according to the HP Lexicon, I think I read somewhere JKR is a member of the Church of England, not the Catholic church, although I don't know exactly where the two differ.

Trace Paper: I agree with many of the statements above, the fact that JKR pulls from so much great literature and finds a new way to retell these wonderful stories is what makes her a wonderful author. And I think she resolved all she reallly needed to, I mean, did we need to see the Grey Land across the sea in Middle Earth to gain closure? No, and we don't need to know who Luna married to know everything is OK in the Potterverse either.

William: Another thing I loved about Neville's big moment is that he used Gryffindor's sword to kill Nagini, Neville IS a true Gryffindor. That was awesome.

Jess: JKR never said only two characters would die, only that two that she hadn't planned to die would and one who was originally to die would get a reprieve. I think the two unplanned deaths were Lupin and Tonks and that the reprieve went to one of the Malfoys. I could have sworn Lucius was gonna get it before I read the book.

Michael: On the DOM, well said.

Gennifer: I too noticed the shout out to the podcasters out there! I think there were tons of stuff in the books that were "easter eggs" for the fans, if that's what you want to call them. They were just little treats for the fandom that you'd REALLY have to be a HP-internet-geek-fanperson to appreciate.

Kyle: Didn't Harry learn about new magic when he learned of the Deathly Hallows? Just sayin...

Greg: Naomi Watts isn't too young to play Narcissa, all the other adults are too old. I've always thought they cast the teachers (and other adults) way too old in the films in order to distinguish between their authoritative role and the students' submissive ones. Think about it, the Marauders graduated in 1976 (along with Snape and Lily, and not far from Narcissa, Lucius, and the Longbottoms); this would make Sirius, Lupin, and Snape 36 or 37 in book 5 (Rickman alone is in his 60's) and this would make Narcissa only 41 or 42 during book 6. According to Wikipedia Watts is now 38.

As for other books to read, I would reccommend Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, it's long, has magicians, and is like HP for adults, but without any smut.

I know this is getting long, but I just wanted to say one more thing about the book, and Snape in particular. I think he is one of the most beautifully tragic characters in all of literature. IMO, most of the dissatisfaction I hear people expressing about how his story was ended/explained/whatever you want to call it, can be attributed to a lack of experience in love and loss. With all due respect, I think you have to have experienced a tremendous amount of love and loss to understand what JKR is trying to illustrate with Snape's character; true, eternal, unrequited, romantic love does exist in the world and it can make people do remarkable things.

Thanks for everything, everyone, especially Greg and Penny.
