Episode #37: The Truth about The Order of the Phoenix Movie

How do you take an 800-page book and make it into a 2-hour movie? It’s not an easy trick to pull off (two out of four attempts have failed). In this week’s show, we listen to a few clips from the upcoming Order of the Phoenix movie and discuss the main themes of the book, and how they are addressed in the film.

Plus, we announce the winner of our Logo Contest!

And in the news:

You can listen to the podcast with the player below, or download it directly as an mp3.

  1. Mrs. Lovegood Says:

I think I can say why there is a code for the WOMBAT instead of using email. I think it’s to get around the internet privacy law for kids. If they used email or user names, took any personal info from people 13 and under, they’d have to get parental permission, a real hassle for the numbers we’re talking about.

I opened a notepad file and saved my code in there, that way I can’t lose it. I got Exceeds Expectations.

And I saved some of the screenshots of some of the questions. Maybe I’ll transcribe them and email them to you later.

  2. Valerie Says:

I just started listening to your podcast about a month ago and I really enjoy it. You guys are pretty entertaining. I just wondered if you have plans to continue podcasting after the final HP book comes out or if you were going to start podcasting about something else.

  3. Mrs. Lovegood Says:

Listening to your description of the entries to the contest, I found even more than before that I’d like to see them all. I still think a Flickr group is the answer to this, post all of them there and then tell us the link and we can see them all. It’s free and doesn’t require membership like Facebook. Then you can also post pics from Prophecy and anything else you want to share with us, members could post pictures of themselves, too, I believe — it’s really interactive.

Just a thought. Congrats to the winners, I can’t wait to see the winning logo.

  4. Penny Says:

Mrs. L- First of all, we look forward to seeing the questions if you are able to transcribe them! Thanks and I think that your rationale for the code is very plausible.

As we speak I am setting up a Flickr account. I am still not sure whether we can post the entries because we need to iron out all the legalities of it, but we’ll let you know. In the meantime, let us know if we can post your entry and that will get us started with the approval stuff.

Valerie- Welcome to the community! We will continue this Podcast for the next forseeable future. We think there will be plenty more to speculate on and to analyze for quite a while!!

  5. Greg Says:

Mrs. Lovegood - I would definitely like to see those screen shots from the WOMBATs; and I think you’re right, it likely did have to do with privacy laws…I copied my code into my Firefox search bar, and meant to copy it out later, but I think Firefox crashed. Oh well, I think it’s pretty safe to assume I got Outstanding. ;)
I think we’ll email all the entrants and make sure they feel comfortable with us posting their work…maybe we can vote on logos for t-shirts or something..

Valerie - Thanks! We do plan on continuing to podcast about Harry Potter after the books are done. There wont be as much speculation, but we’re going to go back and look at some of the themes of the books and dive a little deeper into them. I’m sure there will always be news and movie stuff to talk about for a while, so we’re not going anywhere!

  6. Shareyl Says:

You guys said you wanted the W.O.M.B.A.T. questions and this site post them along with their comments http://www.hp-lexicon.org/wizworld/wombat/wombat3comments.html this link is just for the third test you can probally go back and look at the other two. I also got an Exceeds Expectations. Love your podcast.

  7. angie Says:

Shareyl, thats a handy link. thanks!

  8. Mrs. Lovegood Says:

    Penny and Greg,

I listen to a podcast at C-Net called Buzz Out Loud, maybe you’ve heard of it? Great podcast, highly recommended. They have a Flickr group and have had contests including one where people posted photoshopped movie posters substituting some or all of the trio from the podcast for characters in the movies. I’m sure on some level it violates some form of copyright, but I think it mostly comes under fair use. You’re even further from that, because you’re not even using the actual words “Harry Potter” but just HP, right? I think you’re safe, as long as whoever entered doesn’t have a problem with it. I certainly don’t, for the ones I entered.

I’ll make a transcript of the WOMBAT pages I saved, and maybe send you one screen shot as well. I also took notes and I don’t know where that paper went, I should have done that electronically like the code number, but I did it on a random sheet of paper.

  9. Audree Says:

    Penny and Greg,

I submitted a couple of designs for the contest, and have no problem with you posting them. Like Mrs. Lovegood, I am also very curious to see what the other designs look like. I would also like to congratulate the winners.

Of course, now my 12-year-old daughter and I will have to decide who gets to read the deluxe version first. We are getting one of each, as there is no WAY we will be able to share. (We will both be reading constantly the moment the books arrive.) I have argued that I am a bigger Harry Potter fan, so I should get the deluxe version first. She argues that she has read all the books 6 times each, and I have only read them 4 times each. What is a mother to do? Have a contest? Flip a coin? Give in to her sweet big brown pleading eyes?

I guess I will have to pull out the trump card… I bought the books. I get the deluxe version first. It sucks being a kid.

As I said it my e-mail to you, I had fun with the contest. Thanks for the opportunity, and your kind words.

    Audree

  10. Megan Says:

Hey, I thought you guys might want to know, Hot Topic (which is a store in case you haven’t heard of it) is putting on a sweepstakes to win a trip for two to the set of the HBP movie. You can read about/enter the sweepstakes here at the Hot Topic website. The sweepstakes ends on July 19th.

  11. Aaron Says:

Did you guys change this site around again?

  12. Aaron Says:

Oh yeah Megan… Hot Topic Rulz!!!!!

  13. Maya Says:

The filmmakers certainly have changed Hermione around for the movies when they felt like it, but that line of dialogue about Harry and Cho is actually really close to canon.

    OotP, chapter 16:

“And talking about Michael and Ginny . . . what about Cho and you?”

“What d’you mean?” said Harry quickly.

It was as though boiling water was rising rapidly inside him; a burning sensation that was causing his face to smart in the cold– had he been that obvious?

“Well,” said Hermione, smiling slightly, “she just couldn’t keep her eyes off you, could she?”

Harry had never before appreciated just how beautiful the village of Hogsmeade was.

  14. Frances Says:

Hi guys, I just started listening like, a week ago. The contest sounds really cool, and I would have entered but couldn’t because, well, there’s no way I could have known…:-) I’d be great to see the entries though..flikr would be a great way to show them off.

I got Exceeds Expectations on my WOMBAT too. Not much to say about that. I don’t remember any questions, so I’m not a big help.

I’ll definately send a theory of ya’ll’s to Mugglecast to promote the show. Even though I’m pretty sure they won’t say it on the show, maybe they will…never can tell, right?

Great show. Love it. Hope ya’ll podcast more about HP after the series ends because if not, I will be very upset for a while…I would have to find a new podcast on something else and that always takes time.

    Bye!
    ~Frances

  15. Bill Says:

Penny— I agree totally about the dumbing down of movie Hermione. Personally I think it really started in the third movie with “my hair from behind Hermione” but what more do you expect from Curaon, the man who also gave us the giant hairless Chihuahua werewolf, Tom “Igor” the Barman, the bird killing tree, animal noise candy and annoying shrunken heads that channel Jar Jar Binks??? Despite what Greg may otherwise think of them, the first two movies more accurately portrayed cannon Hermione than any have since.

Anyway, I do agree that movie Hermione misses the point most of the time but you are wrong about the Cho line not being cannon. It is all out of context but in fact look at the last couple of lines of chapter 23 (page 349 in the us paperback) Order of the Pheonix

“And talking about Michael and Jenny..what about Cho and you?”
“What d’you mean? said Harry quickly
It was as though boiling water was rising rapidly inside him: a burning sensation that was causing his face to smart in the cold —-had he been that obvious?
“Well” said Hermione smiling slightly, “she just couldn’t keep her eyes off you could she?

Keep up the great work! I truly enjoy your discussions, don’t always agree but always interesting. Like most people I think y’all have sadly overlooked Kreacher. Kreacher is gonna be the key to it all. Mamma Black and Kreacher are Harry’s only hope….

    Bill

  16. Penny Says:

Bill and Maya- Thank you both for correcting me on that. I don’t know why this seemed so odd to me. I still think it seemed forced though- did Hermione talk to Harry about thsi alone? Was Harry’s crush known to everyone? As I have mentioned before, OoTP is the book I have the least “inside-out” knowledge of because I really didn’t love it, so I’d appreciate these answers…:). BTW, Bill, LOVE LOVE LOVE the Jar Jar Binks comparison, well done!!!

Mrs. L- we are still concerned about getting approval from all the contestants. Assuming we do, we will definitely post them. Keep bugging us abou this though, we don’t want to forget.

Megan- thanks for that info, we’ll be entering!!

Aaron- don’t think we’ve changed things around..?

Welcome Frances- don’t worry, we’ll keep on podcasting long after book 7 comes out (as long as we have listeners).

Audree- thanks for ther permission. We really loved your submission and hopefully there will be a way to include it on something. I think as a parent you DEFINITELY have the right to read the Deluxe Edition first!!

  17. Sally Says:

I have to say, when I first saw the new clips, I was pretty dissapointed. I was thinking that the movie would be a let down, it seemed so slow and boring…but after you guys explained about the themes and how the movie complies to them, I realised that my first impressions may have been a bit silly, and now I’m looking forward to seeing it again. I think they lost Hermione in Chamber of Secrets when they brushed her hair, even thought I am a huge Emma Watson fan.

  18. Maya Says:

    Penny:

It’s page 349 of the US hardback. Hermione starts off the conversation “in an undertone” while Ron is distractedly grumbling about Michael (the three kids are walking down the street at the time). So I think the idea is that it’s a private-in-public conversation between Hermione and Harry. I haven’t actually seen the movie clip– if they’re surrounded by a bunch of people when she says it in the movie, that would be a significant change of context even if the line’s the same.

I’m not sure who really knew about Harry and Cho at that point, either… Hermione, obviously. Ron should’ve caught on by then (but it’s Ron, so who knows). Ginny had probably noticed by then, and Cho’s friend Marietta must’ve had her suspicions. I can’t think of canon to suggest anyone more than that, but it’s a big book so I could easily be forgetting.

  19. Bill Says:

The “…couldn’t keep her eyes off you” (eyes’ is italicized in the book) scene took place in a shop, Schrivenshafts Quill Shop. The clip takes place on the Hogworts Bridge to Nowhere that also came from the POA film. Only Ron and C are with Harry in the book as opposed to the two of them, Ginny, Fred George and I think Neville in the clip. And a few lines before was when Hermione explained that while Ginny used to fancy Harry although she now likes him she doesn’t have the crush and from that Harry figured out the Ginny now talks around him. All the while Ron is muttering about Michael Corner and not really listening. As to who knew about Cho, certainly Ron….and Ginny because of the year before when Harry asked Cho to the ball, when he told Ron, Ginny was there. Don’t know who else knew….

And Penny, feel free to use my comparison any time. Neck and neck (pun sorta intended) which of the two were the most annoying in their respective movies. I go for the heads. You may have noticed I did NOT like the POA movie. I loved the third book, it is my favorite to date and I even have no problem with having things cut out. I understand the need for if not the choices of the cuts. But I have a HUGE problem with the ridiculous things Curaon ADDED—that stupid head, Hermione’s Valley Girl fashion sense, Tom the barman’s hump, the werewolf’s upright posture and electrolysis, the Whomping Willow’s bird aggression, the giant toads and probably almost as bad as the bloody shrunken head, Filtwicks’ whole Hitler-Mini-Me look…I could go on but you get the idea. ;0)

    Bill

  20. Mrs. Lovegood Says:

    Penny,

You should set a date, maybe right after the next podcast, for people to get back to you. Keep track of who’s given you permission and post those. You can always add the rest if/when people contact you w/ permission, those who want to and just forgot will remember when they see the others posted.

  21. Aaron Says:

Beware of the zinger zapper! Who zapped your zinger?

  22. Becky Says:

Guess I’m just an easy-going movie-goer because I’ve really enjoyed all the movies so far. POA was probably my favorite so far. But if I wanted to be critical, my biggest nitpick out of all of them was how Dumbledore was portrayed in GOF. He’s way too gruff - not like how I imagine Dumbledore at all. (For example, the way he practically attacks Harry after Harry’s name comes out of the Goblet.) But all in all I’ve enjoyed them all so far and am looking forward to the OOTP - already have my tickets for a midnight show!

  23. Sally Says:

Everyone seems so judgemental to POA movie. Its my favourite movie so far, definetly. I really loved the way he set it out, especially the ron/hermione shipping.

  24. Greg in Toronto Says:

Hey everyone! Thanks to Penny and Greg again for putting out such a great podcast! I have to say that I think the writers (Kloves/Goldenberg) still have not pulled out some of the finer nuances of the books, but are getting better at acurately portraying the general mood, atmosphere and theme of each story (Prisoner of Azkaban being the greatest attempt in my opinion to date). The nuancing of character I feel is lacking in the series which is why I have just resolved myself to the fact that these films are very colourful fan fiction and leave it at that- an oddly configured parallel universe of the books so to speak. It just comes down to the little things that a Potter fan notices- I mean I can go on and on but if you watch the scene with the trio, the twins, Neville and Ginny crossing the bridge where they discussing possibilities for the headquarters of the DA you will notice Hermione (Emma Watson) mention out loud that she notices the fact that Cho was eyeing Harry like mad at the DA meeting they just attended. Hermione would NEVER announce that kind of news in Ginny’s presense as we come to learn that in Book 6 Ginny held Hermione’s confidence about her deep feelings for Harry. Rowling does not betray her characters- if you remember in the novel, despite the fact that Hermione is the one who proposes the idea of learning defence against the dark arts secretly she still has a hard time with dealing with the possible ramifications (e.g. expulsion) for going behind Umbridge’s back. This is Hermione- while she is great at spouting off great bits of hard logic and is proactive, she is still quite studious in her respect of authority. Hermione obviously comes to the correct conclusion that Umbridge’s actions are not deserving of repect and are tyrranical- it will be interesting to see if we will see the evolution of her character unfold in a balanced fashion.
Although, these films are a much different medium and therefore offer different experiences and opportunities for audience engagemnt- I realize that the action sometimes needs to heightened for visual and emotional impact and these were only clips, so hopefully we will see the characters being more rounded out. I gotta say though… I am looking forward to the battle in Ministry- it read a bit like a screenplay in the book but I think it will be fascinating to see it played out (maybe even more appropriately?) on screen. The scene with Lucius confronting the DA in the Prophecy room looks (and feels!) so great.

  25. William Says:

    It’s official… we’re a cult.
    Watch out Tom Cruise…
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070630/ap_en_ot/potter_the_phenomenon

  26. Laney Says:

I am a not so new listener… but I was wondering if, even though the contest is over, could we submit other entries?

  27. Andy Says:

Hey Guys, haven’t had a chance to listen to this weeks podcast yet but was listening to your one on Snape at Godric’s Hollow last night (having just discovered your podcast a couple of weeks ago I am going back and listening to them all). I have a theory about the invisibility cloak and Snape but not sure where to post it. Please feel free to move it.

I think Snape went to Godric’s Hollow before Voldy to warn the Potters after realising what he had done, worried about him being caught James or Lily gave the cloak to Snape to leave unseen. I think he went back to DD to tell him what he had done and gave him the cloak as proof of his loyalty to the order. I also think Lily was an unspeakable working at the ministry on a counter curse for AK and tried out a charm on that night, which is the Love that DD always talks about. It was enough to protect Harry but in turn she had to sacrifice herself. I think a lot of Snape’s anger to Harry is guilt over Lily’s death.

Love the podcast btw, doesn’t make me feel like i’m the only older fan!

  28. Aaron Says:

I really like that theory Andy. I have always thought Snape’s attitude was all part of the occulmancy act in order to keep his true thoughts hidden from the big V. I’m starting to think Snape is my favorite subject.

  29. Joye Beth Says:

Hey guys! So… I was a bad kid lol, I totally listened to this at work the other day. It was cool though, I was by myself most of the time, except it took me like an hour and a half to listen, because the phone kept ringing lol.

But, I’ve found that I really dislike the way Hermione is portrayed as well. I think that all the movies have portrayed her as a more or less typical teenage girl, when in all reality, she is not. And, just watching the movies, I dont believe that I would get the sense that she is extremely bright… which saddens me. It’s mentioned a couple of times that she’s smart, but usually just in passing, like it’s not important.

Everything aside though, my excitement gauge for both the movie and the book are almost to a breaking point. I dont know what I’m going to do with myself.

But, great podcast, I love you guys!

Oh, and btw, reading Order of the Phoenix again, does anyone else find it extremely funny that Harry hears the chains rattling in the elevator in the ministry? I just find it humorous that it’s pulled by chains lol.

  30. vince Says:

Andy - great theory, fits nicely. I still think Snape is a bad guy but the fact he didn’t kill Harry or even try and hurt him at the end of HBP as they’re running kind of sank me boat there so I resign myself that Snape is the ultimate undercover double-agent. He’s still a dick.

Hermione is definitely dumbed down in the movies . . . nuthin’ we can do about that but we all know how smart she really is

Joye - I bet the elevators are pulled by house elves . . . oh wouldn’t Hermione have a fit!

Penny, Greg - don’t worry about legalities - all submissions were sent to you without any mention of limitations. You’re free to post anything. I do identity and design for a living so believe me, I know. If you’re really worried, get the winners or any other entrants whose design you use, to sign a release of rights to the artwork. This would only apply to artwork you would potentially make money from (t-shirts, etc).

  31. Potters number one fan Says:

I just went to my local Book store and ordered my copy of book 7 on audio CD. Lucky I did because they told me that I ordered the last one they had! I can’t believe that! I didn’t a lot of people baught the audio versions.

  32. Wendy Says:

FINALLY! Someone else agrees with me that Snape is bad. Thanks Vince. While I believe that we are probably misguided, I’m sticking to my guns until I read the very last page of book 7!

Given that, I really do like Andy’s theory. Wow, I’m really conflicted now! :)

  33. Kremlin C. Says:

I really wanted to give your podcast a chance … but honestly, I think that underhanded way of promoting your podcast by asking your users to plug you in MuggleCast & PotterCast is waaay below the belt. It left such a bitter taste in my mouth that I had to unsubscribe immediately. To tell you honestly, it was totally without class, & I was hoping you guys were above that.

    Sorry.

  34. Joye Beth Says:

Back to the whole conversation about who all knew that Harry liked Cho… I just finished book 4 and if I’m not mistaken, Harry announces that he asked Cho to the Yule Ball when he finds out that Ron got shot down by Fleur. And Ron and Ginny were all present at that point. So Ginny did know about Cho. And Hermione came in right after the conversation ended, but I guess she’s just good enough to be able to tell lol.

Just thought I’d answer the question while it was on my mind.

  35. Greg Says:

KremlinC: My apologies. If it makes any difference, it was totally my idea, Penny didn’t want to do it, but I thought it would be funny. I don’t fully understand why this would get in your way of enjoying and/or listening to the show, but I respect your decision.

What does everyone else think? If people think it was classless, I’ll make a formal apology on the next podcast.

  36. Derek Says:

I think it’s interesting that Greg despises Chris Columbus so much, and Penny hates the movie portrayal of Hermione. But the Chris Columbus version of Hermione is the only bookish one we’ve seen in the films. The Columbus version is spot on. It was Alfonzo Cuaron who ruined Hermione by making her shallow and teenagery.

  37. Meg Says:

I have just started listening to your podcast and you guys are great! Just wanted to say thanks for doing a great job — cant wait for the next one!!!

(Oh and on Potter fans being a cult — I am proud to be dumbledore’s through and through)

on pluggin in the Mugglecast/Pottercast — I really thought you were joking :o)

  38. doasis Says:

Glad to hear Penny is back to full health, glad to read a contrite Greg, glad to see the hate for the movies hasn’t ceased.

If they are so bad why watch them?

I like the movies and i accept that some things have to change, Hermione conforming to post-feminist ideals for example. I think making Peter Jackson like cannon films would not be as popular as making studio formula movie adaptations. The fans won’t be any different. They, we, will watch the movies no matter what they are even if it is to rip them apart on sites like this. The movies are for movie goers who haven’t read anything more sophisticated than a menu and want to keep it that way. All four movies are very good movies for the popcorn crowd. I think Order is very much the same mold, it is a case of the whole being greater than the sum of it’s parts. The clips we’ve seen, the ones mentioned on the ‘cast, are miniscule to the overall movie: story, drama, action, etc.

  39. Aaron Says:

I don’t know I really didn’t care one way or the other about the comment Greg made about plugging on other shows. Seemed to me like it was just a good natured tease and not meant as anything harmful. I still think it is the real miricle of the whole Harry Potter adventure both the movies and the books that it has brought so many people from so many backgrounds and ages together to enjoy and speculate on a good story. (take that Laura Mallory) doasis!!!!! I sure missed you. Even though we sometimes don’t see things eye to eye, I missed your opinions and thoughts. Blogging without ya was like eating oatmill without sugar. (kinda bland) BTW just got done reading the Hooters Menu. Quite sophisticated yet unrefined. They have a very good Ham sandwich. ;)

  40. doasis Says:

    NBA and NHL finals

    Drafts

The website wasn’t working for me for a week.

Since you think i am a girl i can say i had my ToM. At least it is good for something.

    So many reasons.

  41. Dee Says:

What in gods name is Oat Mill?
    HOOTERS!!!!
Please while your in a voting mood go and vote for Taras!!!

  42. Greg Says:

Doasis! I was beginning to think you’d left us. I suppose a girl has to focus on NHL/NBA when she can. ;)
Aaron: Let me know how the sandwich is. ;)
And I meant it half as a joke…but if someone actually did it…definite t-shirt prize.

  43. Aaron Says:

I’m sure there were plenty of reasons but it is still good to hear from ya! Lots of girls are sports fans. Dee loves baseball while I just sit and ignore it. On the subject of HP my wife just brought me home some Bertie Botts every flavor beans. They are very odd to say the least. Flavors like bacon, pepper, booger, dirt, earthworm, grass, rotten egg, sardine, soap, vomit and the infamous earwax. I guess they aren’t meant to be eaten. The chocolate frog didn’t even have one good jump.

  44. doasis Says:

The NHL needs all the love it can get. If I talk about it anymore i might violate Commishioner Bettman’s policy of “popularity through anominity.”

The ealier rounds of the NBA were great: Golden State killing Dallas, Cleveland over Detroit, Commishioner Stern and Bruce Bowen cheating Phoenix, ok that was sick drama, but it was still drama. In five years nobody will remember Cleveland getting swept but people will still talk about Lebron Jame’s 42 point game five.

It all started with your old server rejecting your new software, so my absence was all Greg’s fault. And my ToM’s.

And since when is Greg apologizing, for being glib? Glib naturally follows arrogance and self-absorbtion, what next? Rocks sorry for being rocks, Linsey Lohan sorry for being drunk, where will it end?

Why does everybody capitolize doasis? If i was more important i would have a real gender, then get to a capitol “D”.

  45. Aaron Says:

You know I didn’t put a capital D in doasis. I know better. Actually if there is such a thing as a person having an exact polar opposite, I’m sure you and I are about as close as humanly possible and yet I have a strange respect and admiration for the doasis. I am glad you have returned. There could be no closure to the series with out ya! :)

  46. Laney Says:

I was thinking… and I have decided that Draco cant be the dragon… First of all, animagi are people who turn into animals… A dragon is a beast not an animal… Its quite unlikly that he is the dragin because he is reaaally weak! He’s is really young… And helping Harry? I dont know about you guys but I think that is really odd… Why would Harry nemisis help him? Just a theory- Love the show

  47. Frances Says:

Totally unrealated to the topic on hand, I just took that survey, and it made me feel stupid and overobsessive. But, I guess I already knew that.

  48. Constance Says:

I got Outstanding on my W.O.M.B.A.T. and am very pleased with my guessing skills :) I’m really glad I could participate this time, because for the first one I printed out my code, but when it was time to check the grades, it wasn’t accepted. It kept saying it was invalid code. And I missed the second exam; found out about it the day after it was over.

  49. Unnamed Contributor Says:

ok, so i’ve see the movie. Umbridge’s seech about “Progress for the sake of progress” made me wanna vomit.
