Ooh this is getting very deep...me likey. So, the government has basically gone, well, not uphill. Paris Hilton is very..well..she can buy her way out of a jail sentence she deserved. She can pretty much do anything she wants by buying her way through and around things. Laws are screwed up. If someone, somewhere, can get themselves around the law in some way, the law is not serving it's purpous. Laws are a main part of life. If (this is all hypothetical) someone killed your best friend, laws need to be enforced. If there were no laws, then they killer would roam free, killing whoever with no consequence. If you feel that you not press charges on the person who killed your best friend, you would be undermining your friend. I'm sure your friend would want you to press charges and get their killer thrown in jail. If Greg and Penny feel the need to make a rule that says no spoilers and that the site will be moderated for a while, then they will. You can't stop them. I think that there needs to be that rule, and I'm lucky enough to see it enforced. Without laws, there is no order.

P.S. Can anyone guess how old I am? Just a stupid question, but I want to see if anyone gets it.

Aaron,

Must have been a shock. I've lost 4 friends to shootings, drugs and AIDS during high school and college, so I do understand a bit about how you feel. The whole Paris thing just underlines how screwed up our justice system is - you can basically buy your way out of anything these days. We're witnessing the tipping point at the decline of our civilisation I reckon ... I also think part of the attraction of HP and LOR during these times is due to our need for a true hero to save us from the darkness . . . thing is it could be any of us if we're willing to step up to the plate ... isn't that the one of the morays of the books ... Don't despair too much man, just do the best you can - there ain't nuthin' wrong with that. About the hurt - it subsides, the trick is to learn from it and never forget ...

Thanks Vince. That's pretty much how I accept it. Truth be told it was pretty hard on that group of kids. I nicknamed them the happy tree friends and they are pretty much the gothy hippy hybrid group but very close knit. You know how high school clicks can be it was just a shame to have the real world slap them in the face so soon. I probably need to lighten up because I am depressing myself. Yamil just sent a bulletin about Chris Benoit and his family being found dead if you are a wrestling fan. Paris Hilton serves less than 1 month in Jail and gets paid what like a million dollars to go on Larry King? All we need is a cool fog from breeding dementors and it seems like we are living HP first hand. Ok next post will be more cheerful . Promise.

Alicia,

No one is taking offense and certainly no one is asking you to step out of anything! The whole purpose of the board, especially this one, is to have "adult" conversation centred around our beloved Potter books. You certainly don't need to have a history/literary background to participate. I offerred the historical quote as a point in consideration of what the country (US) has degraded into as it pertained to freedom and the purpose of law. The vision of the founding fathers was one of "self-government" which unfortunately has all but dissapeared and while law serves to protect, it also by default restricts our freedom.

Aaron, I'm sorry to hear about your son's friend. Her mother I think reacted in a very positive and noble way. Much better than the MADD crew of mom's whose ultimate purpose is just as noble but whose resulting narrow outlook and efforts have effectively destroyed fourth and fifth ammendment rights. As for being anti-establishment, this is what "freedom" is all about and being one of them (although I'm not a death-rocker) I can tell you that freedom is about diversity and dissent not complicity and apathy. Although her life was short, at least she lived it expressing true self - props to her! I'm not sure there's any comfort there for you but it seems to me she had a positive life at the end there . . .

Ok one more quick thing. I really wasn't trying to preach anarchy guys and I really appreciate the comments Even those who so tactfully disagree with me. I have been around the block a few times so I wanted to touch on something Angie said. In January of this year my oldest son had a friend that sorta freaked me out. Very anti-establishment all dressed in black with piercings and had the total emu thing going. She was 17 years old taking drivers education when she was hit from behind at a stop sign and killed by a drunk driver. Her my space page is still there with the last log on date being the day she was killed. Kinda serves as a morbid reminder of how short life can be. Anyways her mother donated her organs and actually was instrumental in keeping the drunk driver from going to prison. Said something like there wasn't any point in causing any more hurt. I dunno if I could have done that and pray I never have to find out. I sure have to respect her decision and her strength to forgive. A good example of how one greiving mother made me feel like a real whimp. There's a moral there somewhere but I can't remember it just now.

Well since I never got to take my W.O.M.B.A.T.s I have to say to Vince and Aaron I apologize to both if you feel I have over stepped my bounds. I obviously don't have the historical intelect for your comment to make any since to me Vince and that in not meant as an insult.I Agree that any spoilers about the book would be very unwelcome, I was just saying that I felt an outburst about rules was a little silly to me when we were supposed to just be talking about Harry Potter. However since I am not a long time contributor to these blogs I will gracefully step out and just continue to silently listen to Greg and Penny since I have just become a Hippocrit to my own standards. To Greg and Penny, I love your Pod cast and keep up the good work. I have been listening to your Podcast since I discovered there were Podcasts for Harry Potter and I voted for you and have made donations to your cause. Now on my last entry I would never say that no one is not entitled to there opinion. Its just that I have a very soft skin. I will continue to read blogs because I am very interested in what you all have to say, I just can't keep up with the very smart people who are on here and I mean that in the most sincere way. My degrees are in science and not in Literature/History. Good luck to all and can't wait for Book 7. Been a LONG TIME POTTER FAN.

Ok I have the day off and have a somewhat better outlook on the day. I am on the computer a lot due to my work and have used this forum to pass the time and communicate with some really good people. We may not always agree but always have had fun. The whole moderation thing made me think ( a dangerous thing to do) So out of curiosity I started poking around and found a ridiculas amount of these spoilers. Some even disquised as a cool HP link then proclaiming, I hope I have ruined all your geeks lives!" Kinda sad that some people are actually entertaining themselves by inspiring anger and disappointment rather than the fun and friendship that is found here. Greg that was a low blow with the biblical reference just cause you know I won't poke fun at that.

Some even disquised as a cool HP link then proclaiming, I hope I have ruined all your geeks lives!” Kinda sad that some people are actually entertaining themselves by inspiring anger and disappointment rather than the fun and friendship that is found here. Greg that was a low blow with the biblical reference just cause you know I won’t poke fun at that. Penny keep up the dilgent work in protecting the forums from the idiots who want to gain fame by being the next U-tube Potter spoiler. Did you really do that well on the Wombats?

Gimme a break! Terms like Censorship, constitutional freedoms and liberties apply solely to the public domain and are entirely irrelevant when it comes to private property, such as a privately owned website, which may post or refuse to post whatever it wants. As long as Greg and Penny quit their day jobs and ignore their children in order to ensure that moderated conversation continues at close to pre-moderation speed, all will be fine.

I think when the book comes out, some people, whether malicious or not, will inevitably comment on a major storypoint that may spoil it for those who haven't gotten as far in the book in thier exuberance to affirm or reject a prognostication (greg - take note here). I think this is what Greg and Penny are referring to.

Aaron, as a long time contributor to the site, I am sure you wouldn't do such a thing, a question of civil liberties or not . . . besides, I think the rant is better directed towards the government who has effectively erased American citizen's civil liberties - we're not talking about freedom of expression here really . . . As much as I like "The Annoying Devil" (British comedian on "Balls of Steel" - if you haven't seen this, check it out for sure), if he or someone else wrecked the book for me, I'd bust him in the mouth. If it happened on the net, I would flame that person to the end of thier days and hack thier myspace page with nasty pictures and comments. Believe me, it WILL happen . . .

Alicia - on Aaron's side of the coin, I offer you a quote from Benjamin Franklin that is truly relevant in our times:

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Laws, although restricting of our freedom, at the same time bring us freedom. Through the restriction of comment moderation, we are all free to discuss and speculate on Book 7 without fear of evil.

It's a bit of a paradox; and it's a (the?) theme of the book of Exodus.

Aaron, I see where you are coming from but I think moderation of any site is approriate and needed to protect others. I would be nice to think we live in a perfect world were such things were not needed. That everyone had respect for everyone else and so on. Now, I am not as articulate and smart as you or many of the others on this site, but what I couldn't understand was why you had an outburst against something meant to protect others rights. All it does is upset others as to what you say and provoke a retaliation against your words. As far as you saying "Any law or rule is an infringement to freedom" I have to ask you these queastions: If your child was throwing rocks through your house windows, would you not make up a RULE that that was not allowed? Or if a drunk driver hit your car and killed your family would you not want a LAW in place against that sort of behavior? Yes we do sacrifice some freedoms for laws and rules and if your read a little more deeply into Harry Potter you will find those same Laws and Rules there for safety and protection of the MANY which is what we discuss here.

Oh boy I'm having a flashback to a earlier discussion. Ok I was not attemping to articulate diddly squat just express frustration. The fact is you got what I was trying to say. I have to say I am a bit confused when you compare taking precautions such as looking both ways to my stance against secondary victimazation for the crimes of another. Your talking apples and I'm talking oranges so it would seem your attempt to articulate was not well thought out either. Actually I have nothing against the site being moderated and thought it already was I just like to critic the reasoning behind it. Any law or rule is an infringement to freedom. Now that doesn't mean it is not needed. I only say that we should take time to consider the effect before we so easily submit to relinquishing or freedoms. Notice no where did I say this moderation was wrong or not prudent. All I am saying is it stinks that such "proative action" is even in our face while talking about Harry Potter.

Aaron: I think you argument concerning loss of constitutional rights might have some merit if it were better articulated. Having said that, you argument in this context makes no sense at all. You argue that: "Any change, rule or lae (law) inspired by fear is just simply a victory for what is feared!" There are literally thousands of things that we do because of fear. We lock our doors. We check both ways when we cross streets. We drive defensively even though others may be at fault. We avoid certain neighborhoods. We try to protect or wallets or purses from theft. Reasonable inconveniences save us from major inconveniences or calamities.

I came here to support the decision of the prognosticators. There is a story, supported by a youtube video of an idiot who bought Half-Blood Prince, scanned the last 50 or so pages and then announced to everyone in line to buy the book that Dumbledore had been killed by Snape on page whatever. Why someone would do that is a discussion for another forum. But the fact that we know there are malicious people who would destroy the joy of discovering the outcome book 7 for themselves is indisputable. The loss of spontaneity is a large price to pay for preserving the integrity of book 7. That is an argument worth making. Arguing that no price should ever be paid to avoid an undesirable outcome is rhetoric and poor rhetoric at that.

What a bunch of hooie! Regulation, screening, moderating, might as well be censorship! Any change, rule or lae inspired by fear is just simply a victory for what is feared! To be even mildly inconvenienced due to the mistrust or crimes of another just punishes us all for thir indescretion. Yes it would be rotten if some idiot posted a spoiler but not nearly the tragedy of losing something much more personal. You may say it's no big whoop or it is for everyones good but who is to say what is good for everyone? Not I. Examples of this lack of understanding include our schools, our laws and our interpersonal communication with each other. None of which have in anyway made safer or better by changes influenced by fear. If only we could get as spun up over our daily loss of contitutional rights as we have over Harry Potter. Geeze never tell me we are doing something to so we don't have to be afraid of. It grinds my gears.
