Episode #27: Alternate Endings and More Cover Speculation
This week’s podcast is a sort of amalgamation of a bunch of different stuff. On the one hand, Penny and I have come up with the Top 10 Alternate Endings for The Deathly Hallows (assuming it was written in the vein of other popular stories). Then we’ve got more speculation on what is going on on the US cover. And finally, we’ve unveiled our first-ever HPProgs contest! You’ve got to listen to get the details, but I’ll give you one clue.
In the news:
- People in the UK are betting on the end of Harry Potter.
- Harry Potter won the 2007 Nickolodeon Kid’s Choice Award!!
- Do you live in the “Harry-est” city?
- Bloomsbury financial future is on the rocks.
- Daniel Radcliffe to appear on American Idol.
- You can win tickets to the Hollywood premiere of OoTP.
You can listen to the podcast using the player below, or download it directly as an mp3.

Fun podcast….I enjoyed the lack of srict format this time. I also REALLY enjoy the concept of a contest. May I suggest, (if it’s not too much of a pain in the tookus), that we, the dedicated listener, be presented with a new contest on a monthly basis? I mean, this is just an idea, and you can take it or leave it, but please allow me to plead my case-
I submit this idea for 2 reasons:
1. From a marketing standpoint, this could be another way to expand your
listenership. It gives subscribers one more outstanding level of
interactivity. In essence, another way to become a part of the show and
thusly, a part of your community. It seems to me that, things of this
nature could only promote listener loyality. (Plus, the potential types of
contest are endless, it’s only once a month, and the reward need be
nothing more than public bragging rights to keep things simple.)
2. I’m quite competitive by nature, but I am also the WORST at doing
foreign accents, so I couldn’t play along on this one and I’m totally
bummed about it!
Anyway, it’s just a thought and whether you decide to use it or not, I still love the show!

Hmm… I wonder, could a born and bred American who (perhaps foolishly) prides herself on her British accent do the contest in reverse?
April 6th, 2007 at 12:02 pm
Angie- if we could come up with contest ideas, we certainly would love to do them on a regular basis. We’ll have to see. Thanks for the suggestion though!
Michal- here is the problem- who would judge your British accent? Perhaps we can save that one for the winner of this contest- the guest host who will in fact be able to judge the British accents.

Well I’m home from work. I listened to the podcast and now am going to sleep. Rest assured when I awake I will have comments. (evil yawning laugh)

Great Podcast guys… but what happened to the The Office alternate ending for Deathly Hallows??? I need to find out whether Ginny will end up with Bob Vance, of Bob Vance Refrigeration after Harry dumps her for that Hufflepuff hussy, Susan Bones…

Great podcast. I really like the idea of the contest. How about a German with a mix of both. I’m pretty much ridiculed by both sides: by the British for my American accent and by the Amerian for my British accent (at least not the German accent- guess we all know how stupid that one sounds). So am I allowed to join the competition or is this for native speakers only?
Hope you have a great weekend

I was just wondering if maybe you could convince JKR to let American people be in her movies… maybe just as extras.. then our accents wouldnt “ruin everything” but seriously that is my dream. Just kidding i know u can’t really do that.. but yeah. So um that unmentionable thing about American Idol.. can u at least say which episode it will be during? is it still the 24-25th of April one? and will it be during the show or during the commercials? (IF U KNOW, if not no problem.)

I wonder — do you have a spoiler policy? I saw your post above with links to news stories you mention in your latest episode and am very frightened of the one about betting in the UK. I was spoiled by a similar article before HBP came out, telling of a German town that had a sudden rise in betting that a certain character would die in the book and the town was the location of one of the printing companies that was printing the book (and it turned out to be a true spoiler, they were all betting on the character who actually did die in HBP).
So, I’m trying to avoid all articles that might give real clues by people who have access to the books before publication and are abusing the privilege. I draw a big distinction between something like that and the kind of speculation and theorizing I’ve heard on your previous podcasts (which I very much enjoy). I really liked your other podcasts. I discovered them a couple of weeks ago and listened to many of the archived ones as well as the current ones before #27. I enjoy hearing adults talk about Harry Potter, even if you are still younger than I am by a number of years.
I’m going to refrain from listening to your latest episode till I know whether you just mention this article and that it talks about Brits betting on the book, or whether you actually mention betting that seems to be affected by someone who knows for sure who dies and what happens in book 7. And I wonder if you would consider posting a spoiler policy about what type of news you will and won’t cover regarding stories that might give away the major plot points as we get closer to the publication date, and after as well.
Thanks and keep up the great work!

Just a quick note, Harry does not pass out after the whole posession thing. He does seem to kinda zone out but he does remain concious:) Great show nonetheless guys!

Did you know that one of the main differances in between the English and American main battle tanks is that the Challenger II has it’s own tea maker inside the turret? Hope I din’t reveal any great military secret there,.
April 7th, 2007 at 7:41 pm
Mary- Go ahead. We’d love to hear what you’ve got!
Mrs. Lovegood- We didn’t mention anything explictly so go ahead and listen to the podcast. Good thoughts on the spoiler warnings though:)

April 8th, 2007 at 9:05 am

April 8th, 2007 at 9:27 am

April 9th, 2007 at 3:41 am
Ok it’s like 3:30 AM and I just woke up. Totally slept thru Easter. I have read thru the comments and hope that all qualified listeners will give this a shot. I mean Greg and Penny have made this easy for you. The key factor is that the United States is a melting pot. What is american accent? I hardly understand people from New England then I go to Georgia ask directions and get something like., ” Yep it’s over yonder down past the holler, ain’t it?” Then Texas and Tex Mex, German Pennsylvania? My point is somewhere in this country there is someone y’all can immitate and have fun with it. Oh geez Iz forgots New Yorkers cuz Iz wishing youz guz good luck.
April 9th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
so whats my excuse I can do a good bloody accent…..
The Bucket Residence Lady of the House speaking…. No we do not have a special on spicy pork loins….
April 10th, 2007 at 8:30 am
Greg- the iTunes chart is for NEW subscribers only.
April 11th, 2007 at 1:50 pm
Finally listened to the podcast (was away on vacaition- returned home SIQ) I must say this was your best podcast yet in terms of flow and giving each other room to talk (Greg). I still have a heart for your earlier podcasts that were 8 minutes shorter. Oh well guess the horse is out of the barn on that one.
Looking forward to your contest results. I’m in Pennsyltucky is that in America?
I have a suggestion for an show topic. As a memeber of other Harry Potter discusion boards i commonly find posters their treat the magic of Legilimency as a skyhook for all their assumtions “How did Snape know…. How did Dumbledore think that… Maybe Voldemort knew… McGonagall could…” Legilimency is the answer to everything! You’d think Legilimency makes money green or is the reason the Eagles and the Ravens were in the playoffs last season-they didn’t play well they read minds.
It is so annoying that these posters are too lazy or ignorant to see these assumptions as genuine flaws in their theories. YOU DON’T DO THAT!! YOU HAVE SOUND THEORIES WITH REAL SUBSTANCE!
That said what is your take on Legilimency? How do you, Penny and Greg who know each others mind well enough without wands, see legilimency in Harry Potter? Is it a significant discipline of magic that holds the key to the whole series or is it just an casual oddity? Is it easy to use or as tough as befriending a Knarl? This is only a suggestion, i don’t know your ideas on this, i am not a mind reader.
April 11th, 2007 at 5:17 pm
He he he doasis is cool
April 12th, 2007 at 12:02 am
I think we’ll get into Legillemency/Occlumency in a coming podcast. Good suggestion.
As for length: we’ve keeping it short…but at the same time, making it a bit longer. I guess we’re trying to please everyone.
April 12th, 2007 at 11:57 am
Hey 30 minutes is to short an hour too long. Go for 45 minutes LOL.
April 12th, 2007 at 12:21 pm
We’re getting there…
April 12th, 2007 at 2:48 pm
Oops its a Knurl- one of those paranoid hedgehogs from Harry’s O.W.L.
April 13th, 2007 at 6:09 pm
Highlander ending….. Harry chops off Voldemortes head with the Griffendore sword and screams, There can only be ONE!!!!!!
April 20th, 2007 at 1:35 pm
Hey Guyz,
great episode!!! The top ten of alternate endings is really amusing!
About the contest, don’t complain for the small number of participants: I didn’t participate for 2 reasons:
1) I listened today (april 20th), so I’m *a little* late ;p
2) My english is very bad, so I could never even think about imitating any accent whatsoever.
I guess many of the listeners had similar reasons for their absence from the contest
Soooo, please please please keep to avoid spoilers about Lost (here in Italy they’re about the middle of the second season ^^;)
Bye
