It's funny that you brought up the villain from die hard as Alan Rickman, the actor that portrays Severus Snape, also played Hans the terrorist from the first Die Hard movie.
Just started listening to the podcast. I find the banter between you too entertaining. Can't wait to get caught up with the rest of your podcasts. :)

Hey -

I'm way late to this batch of comments, but I have one quick thought to add on horcrux hiding places.

I remember reading somewhere that JK Rowling gave instructions to the movie set designers about gravestones or a graveyard. I don't remember wher I read it - but it was something like, the set designers wanted to put some gravestones, or a whole graveyard, on the grounds of Hogwarts for "atmosphere," but Rowling said no, you can't do that, because there IS a graveyard - or gravestones - at Hogwarts, but not there, the graves are somewhere else. That bit of trivia popped to mind when everyone started speculating on a Horcrux being hidden at Hogwarts.

Then, Dumbledore did say during the quest for the locket that LV fears death more than anything, and that's why he protected his items with "deathly" things - e.g., using inferi to guard the locket.

Put the two things together, and I can't help wondering if the graveyard/graves Rowling alluded to will turn up in Book 7 either as the hiding place for the Hogwarts horcrux, or maybe as a red herring hiding place. Of course, there's been no mention of graves or graveyards yet, despite all the descriptions of the Hogwarts grounds....but maybe there's some sort of burial site off in the forest somewhere, or down near Hogsmede, or a crypt under the castle. Dumbledore was buried at Hogwarts - was he the only one? Where are the Hogwarts founders buried Hiding a Horcrux in a tomb/crypt/grave/mausuleum of a founder, or another important person, would seem to "fit" pretty well, no?

Just some food for speculation.

Hey Penny- thanks for the update! Regarding the Fidelius charm- I think Flitwick himself said in PoA that with the charm in place Voldemort could have his face pressed right up against the window of the Potter's home and he still would not be able to see James and Lily inside- unless of course the secret keeper wished to divulge the secret of their location to him. The charm hides the subject of the spell itself. So again, assuming that Voldemort could become his own secret-keeper, Harry could do all the research he wants (accurately in fact) and still not be able to locate it even if it was placed right in front of him.

OK, there is a lot to respond to.

Greg (in T.): We definitely don't lack in pop cultural information- I have always said that my brain retains every single stupid pop culture reference EVER. Greg has watched the UK office, I haven't seen any episodes yet. He enjoyed it.

Interesting thought on Voldemort hiding the horcrux in the RoR- remember in HBP when Harry needed a place to hide the prince's potion book? There were objects that had been hidden by countless other people (from all of the years at Hogwarts probably) there already. Very interesting theory and definitely a possibility!

As far as the fidelius charm goes- assuming someone could use it on themselves, I don't know why Voldemort wouldn't have done it. It is a brilliant idea! But, this doesn't preclude Harry from finding the horcruxes though. He is still able to research and come to his own conclusions as to what the horcruxes are- and then destroy them. So, yes, if voldemort did perfrom the fidelius charm on himself then no one else would be able to tell Harry the exact locations of the horcruxes (or what they are I guess), but chances are no one was going to do that anyway. Does that make sense?

As far as hogwarts goes, I don't think more than one horcrux will be there. We saw what great lengths voldemort went to hide the locket- if it was in his power, he will not make it easy to find the other horcruxes.

Tim- I don't think the mirror of erised could be used to find the horcruxes. If you think about it like this, the mirror shows the user only their deepest and greatest desires. Harry's greatest desire is not to find the horcruxes- it might be to kill voldemort and the way to do that will be to find the horcruxes but that is just a means to the end. It is a good thought though- I do wonder what role the mirror will play in book 7.

I do agree with you that at least some of book 7 needs to be at hogwarts. I think Harry will be spending more time there than he thinks.

Thanks for your support on the the theory Tim :) I think that even without Harry having to do a Horcrux hunt on the grounds of Hogwarts that he would have to return to Hogwarts anyway to prevent Voldemort from taking over the joint. My prediction is that in Book 7, Voldy and gang will end up overwhelming the Ministry of Magic and Voldemort's first line of business will be to take over at Hogwarts and turn it into a school for the Dark Arts (this was mentioned by Hagrid as Voldemort's intentions in the first war in the Philosopher's stone)- we also know from HBP that the school always held a powerful hold over Voldy because of its magical history and he was always happiest there.

I agree with you Greg on your horcrux at Hogwarts theory. I'm not sure necessarily if it will be hidden in the room of requirement or not but I do think that there will be atleast one at the school. It would a nice familiar environment for JKR to have Harry have to search the school and to find something. If anything there will be one hidden there just so Hogwarts is in the 7th book otherwise Harry may have no other reason to return and in my opnion some of book 7 needs to be at Hogwarts.

Hey guys, just wanted to throw out a quick theory: Do you think that Voldemort managed to hide one of his Horcruxes in the Room of Requirement when he returned to Hogwarts while he was sharing a body with Quirrel in Book 1? I was rereading the HBP chapter, "Lord Voldemort's Request" and Riddle was so adamant about getting back to the castle to probably search it to find possible relics left behind by the founders... I wonder if in Book 1 he perhaps used the opportunity to store one or more of his horcruxes in the room of requirement since the room itself is guarded by powerful magical enchantments. I also like the fact that JK Rowling described the room as being the size of a cathedral- which provides allusions to the fact that Voldemort was hiding something considered sanctified to him. I also think that when Voldemort lost his body that his first impluse was probably to be close to his horcruxes. We know that he was hiding in the forests of Albania where he met up with Quirrel and I bet Voldemort used Quirrel to bring back one or more horcruxes back with him to be secured at Hogwarts.

I also had another thought as I was thinking about all this: why didn't Voldemort think to use a Fidelius Charm on himself to conceal the location of his horcruxes?? That seems to me to be a fool-proof method of concealing his scret. Then I thought back to Flitwick's explanation of how the charm worked: "an immensely complex speel... involving the magical concealment of a secret inside a single, living soul...". The fact of the matter is that Voldemort's soul was so twisted and mangled and un-natural that the charm would probably not work. Plus, I cannot believe that Voldemort would ever trust anyone else with this specific secret, as according to Dumbledore, "Voldemort operates alone..." What do you all think??

I also had another thought as I was thinking about all this: why didn’t Voldemort think to use a Fidelius Charm on himself to conceal the location of his horcruxes?? That seems to me to be a fool-proof method of concealing his scret. Then I thought back to Flitwick’s explanation of how the charm worked: “an immensely complex speel… involving the magical concealment of a secret inside a single, living soul…”. The fact of the matter is that Voldemort’s soul was so twisted and mangled and un-natural that the charm would probably not work. Plus, I cannot believe that Voldemort would ever trust anyone else with this specific secret, as according to Dumbledore, “Voldemort operates alone…” What do you all think??

Im definitely not going to shoot down this theory about the mirror of Erised....(or Oesed in Spanish)....If it does appear...It would definitely help Harry in the search of the Horcruxes......And about the wand in Ollivander's store...It has always bothered me why Jk payed (is that well said?) so much attention to that wand...

Oh and by the way, for those of you who haven't registered at the forum, Go Now. Were having some great discussions in there as well as games, and even discussions about non-Harry Potter things. It's hpprogs.es.mw

Congratulations Penny and Greg for the great movement you've being having lately in this blog!! You're getting pretty popular lately!!!

I was wondering what everyone thought about this idea. I read that JKR said that the mirror of Erised from book 1 would return in book 7. I was thinking that maybe Harry would use this to help figure out what each horcrux is and possibly even hints of where to find them. The mirror shows what your hearts deepest desire is and at this point in his life Harry has most likely come to terms with his parents death and he is now focused more on deafeating Voldemort than anything else (even dating a hottie like Ginny) Looking in the mirror might be able to show him what he wants the most now. Just a thought so everyone feel free to shoot down this theory.

Hey Penny! Unfortunately I am not heading to Prophecy 2007 this summer since I will be heading out on an Alaskan cruise with some friends of mine, which in itself is not a bad compromise :) However, I am still not happy to be missing a chance to spend time with other Harry Potter fans that are as crazy and obsessive as I am, lol. I am really looking forward to this summer of Potter though, with the movie and the book.... its going to be a great time for Potter fandom... I can't wait to finally get some answers from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!!
To answer your question about the inside art of the UK versions... well, there isn't any!! This is yet another reason why I am jealous of the gorgeous editions you guys get. I have always loved the chapter pictures that GrandPre includes on the inside and the last two covers have been great... very colourful and atmospheric. I did a little research and the cover art process and it is actually handled quite differently by Bloomsbury and Scholastic. GrandPre actually gets a copy of the rough manuscript from Scholastic, highlights the passages where Rowling writes descriptions on character and scenery and sends back rough drafts back to the publishers and Rowling for final approval. However, at Bloomsbury, Rowling and publishers only allow the illustrator to read a passage or two from the book and provide direct instructions on what sort of image they are looking for on the cover and jacket art. To me, Grandpre is offered a much more organic process for creating art for these incredible books. I am actually thinking that I may order a copy of the U.S. deluxe edition in addition to my UK edition since this is the last book :) Im sure Grandpre is hard at work as we speak... we all need to get her address and start bugging her for details!! lol

Greg from Toronto: First of all, I love Toronto! Welcome. (Will you be going to Prophecy 2007 in Toronto this summer?). As much as I am not a huge fan of Mary GrandPre's work, I have to say I like it a lot better than the art on the covers of the UK versions of the books. Although I haven't seen the inside art so maybe you can fill me in on that one.

Tim- I agree with you 100%.

Yes, ive heard rumours that the U.S. cover might be a blood-red but if its any indication from the Scholastic placeholder art, it might even be black- which would be great for both the U.S. and UK versions. My favourite U.S. cover is definitely the Order of the Phoenix in the solid midnight blue. I feel that it captured the feel of the book and portrayed a more mature Harry. I am really hoping they do something big for the reveal when we finally get a glimpse of both covers!

I'm not a big fan of the UK covers (although if I were to have to pick a favorite from the UK covers it would be book 6). I personally like the last 2 books in the US editions with the single color tone. I wish Mary Grandpre had done that from the start with the entire HP series. It will be interesting to see what the color tone is for the US book 7. I honestly think it will be black or grey in color but I have heard others say that it could be red.

Hey Penny and Greg, I absolutely love your podcast. It is refreshing and a great deal satisfying to finally find a Potter podcast whose main focus is discussion and speculation on specific topics in the the Potter canon- you have done a great job with both and I now look forward to putting your podcast on my MP3 player each week.

I was listening to your podcast where you rated the books and I have to agree with Penny that Book 6 was my favourite as well. The book definitely represented a return to literary discipline for Rowling, both in her plotting and characterization- and it just has some beautifully written passages- of note for myself was the meeting between Dumbledore and Voldemort when he came back to request a job from Dumbledore (the power struggle there was well depicted) and the opening chapter featuring the muggle British Prime Minister was priceless.

I hail from Toronto, Canada and we get the UK versions here. I have always been a bit jealous of the U.S. editions because of the chapter pictures and some of the covers. I was wondering what everyone thought of the U.K. edition covers- I admire Mary Grandpre's "soft-geometry" approach to her illustrations, but I also think our versions bring an added touch of realism... in fact, for the first time ever I felt that the UK version cover of Half-Blood Prince (where Harry and Dumbledore are encircled in magical flame) beat out the U.S. version. What do you all think??

Take care and thanks for a great podcast,

Greg

Sorry, read back through my posts and I wasn't making sense. I read two similar theories, one had seven items and said crown, the other only had six.

Thats what happens when I try to post around the kids (LOL).

I've seen alot of people say that the crown may be a tiara (either the tiara mention in the room of requirement or the Prewett tiara Molly is loaning to Fleur - they may even be the same one - Voldemort wanted back in Hogwarts). In some cultures a tiara is a sign of an intellegent female (Rowena Ravenclaw). Molly said that the tiara was goblin made and Voldemort targeted both Molly's brothers and a family of goblins.

As for the wand, I agree with Tim that it may be Voldemorts, however there is always the single wand that was on display in Olivander's window (SS/PS).

With the horcrux, I like how they tie back to Authurian legend. Voldemort is the king of evil and he split his soul up into items that mirror what a king gets when he is crowned. I find the scepter/wand one to be very interesting. I tend to think that maybe the night Voldemort tried to kill Harry and make his final horcrux and the spell "rebounded" that maybe he used the death of James or Lily to make his own wand a horcrux. Not even sure it's even possible, its just a thought off the top of my head.

Becklenay- Welcome! I love getting support for my cloak theory. I think I heard something similar to this in Arthurian Legend or something. Well, the ring makes sense, the journal, and the chalice (Hufflepuff's cup) but what are your thoughts on the other things?

Poe- Welcome also (this has been a great few days for newcomers)! I don't know. How tragic would that be?!?

To be fair, in regards to Harry breaking up with Ginny being reminiscent to the end of Spiderman, this is something of a cliche in modern hero cultural objects. All of the big ones: Superman, Batman, Spiderman etc. have at some point or another the hero having to sacrifice the woman of his dreams for his duty. It's done to death but it always works and that's because it's equally self-sacrificing and self-indulgent, two qualities that are musts for heroes.

It also is usually only done when the two characters are going to end up together. There would be no emotional storyline in Spiderman 2 if Parker doesn't leave Mary Jane at the cemetery in Spiderman 1. As I write this I realize I have to reconsider my theory that Harry is going to die... Which means that perhaps both Ron and Hermione have to die. Or maybe... Rowling will go dive headfirst into Harry as the ultimate in tragic heroes and have Ginny die because Harry had previously pushed her away. I think I like that. Oh yeah, new here, really enjoy the podcast.

Or maybe… Rowling will go dive headfirst into Harry as the ultimate in tragic heroes and have Ginny die because Harry had previously pushed her away. I think I like that. Oh yeah, new here, really enjoy the podcast.
