Episode #17: Horcruxes

What is the deal with these Horcruxes?  We know Voldie’s soul has been broken into seven pieces, six in other object, while one remains with his bad self.  What are the unknowns, what do we know, what don’t we know, and what might we know?  All this will be answered in this all-Horcrux edition of HPProgs.

Plus, the news and an interview with Sister Judy (she’s our sister, not a nun), who just finished reading all six books for the first time!

You can listen to the podcast with the player below, or download an mp3 directly.

Well well well, if it isnt Greg and Penny! (I was told to say) my mom is the best!! Penny, Greg you guys are really funny. You also told me that I would be able to guest on your show, so tell me when-preferably during school. Who knew that you hated Oprah!!!

  2. Yamil Says:

Okay, I also hate Oprah!!!!! She doesn’t remember Wingardium Leviosa, boggart….OH MY GOD………..just kidding. HEY I WANT AN INTERVIEW!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

  3. Yamil Says:

You know i was trying to be the first comment….thank you….=(

  4. Yamil Says:

You know…the idea of the Invisibility Cloak is not a bad idea after all but i dont think its a Horcrux. I think theres a mistery behind the invisibility cloak but i dont think its related to the horcrux…..Hey guys!!!!! I JUST REMEMBER R.A.B. WAT ABOUT HIM!!!!!!

  5. penny Says:

Eliana- I am glad you liked the show. Your mom DOES rock and we were so happy she agreed to be interviewed, it takes a lot of guts (especially since she hasn’t even ever heard a podcast!). I think we’ve done enough family interviews for the time being but we’ll let you know if/when we change our minds.

Yamil-sorry you weren’t the first this time. Oh well, there is always next time.

  6. penny Says:

What ABOUT R.A.B.? Horcrux? Isn’t he dead?

  7. Yamil Says:

HE IS DEAD? I NEED TO RE-READ THE BOOK…….(D’OH)

  8. Yamil Says:

I just remember something…i dont know if I heard it in another podcast but I think Nagini is one of the horcruxes…..then theres the cup, the locket, the diary, the ring, nagini and …… i dont remember nothing more but i’ll be investigating it….

  9. Angie Harwell Says:

First: Yeah, Oprah’s of the devil! (ironically, she has more money than God…think that’s all coincidence?) However, I don’t think I will indulge the internet with yet mroe ramblings on that subject.

Your interview with Judy was great fun. It seemed a bit rushed, but then again maybe I’m just so HP obsessed that I want more talk constantly. Still, I want to send a personal ‘congrats’ to judy for taking her first steps towards the light of HP.

Now, as to this business of Horcruxes….
We know that Voldemort originally split his soul into 7 different bits. (That’s assuming that Dumbledore is correct, of course.) One bit of those 7 obviously resided in his body, leaving 6 to be hidden in horcruxes. Let’s just hypothesize that when Voldemort attacked the infant Harry, that the rebounding curse actually DID kill that 1/7 of Voldemort’s soul, along with his body. That would mean that he would’ve had to use another 1/7 to resurrect himself again. Since that bit was being hidden in a horcrux (unknown), we would be down to 5 remaining, right? Now stay with me here: 1 was destroyed in Tom Riddle’s diary, (down to four), and 1
was destroyed in the Gaunt family ring, which leaves us with 3. If 1 was indeed the Slytherin locket and we assume that the locket was destroyed by Regulus Black, that would leave us with just 2 horcruxes left to find! (and that is a must smaller and less daunting task to consider. Don’t you think?)
My personal “gut feeling” is that the Hufflepuff cup HAS to be one of the 2. It’s only a gut feeling, I admit, but when you consider that
    A) Dumbledore took the time to show the pensieve memory of
Tom Riddle meeting Hepzibah Smith and seeing the cup to Harry (which emphasized it’s importance), and
    B) that Hepzibah Smith actually stated that the cup possesses magical powers in its own right, and
    C) that it was stolen by Tom Riddle after Hepzibah’s murder….well…it just seems like an obvious choice to me. (*On a side note, Hepzibah said that she had not thoroughly investigated the magical powers of the cup herself. This could help Harry in the end somehow. Perhaps it can repel evil in someway? I mean, Helga Hufflepuff was on the side of good, not evil, right?)
Now there is only 1single bit of Voldemort’s soul floating around after that, and I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I think it’s related to Ravenclaw in some way. (I know that Nagini seems more obvious and/or more likely, but hear me out.) I think that Voldemort really wanted something from each of the 4 Hogwart’s houses. My hypothesis is that he got 3 (Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw), but couldn’t get his hands on the 4th, (Gryffindor), because they were too protected by Dumbledore
and/or magic. As much as I hate to say this because I feel like I’m jumping on a teenage, fan-girl wagon, I think that Harry himself, very well could be the final, and thus far unobtainable, horcrux. The only KNOWN
Items of Gryffindor’s are the sorting hat and the sword, both of which have been in Dumbledore’s office and under his protection. But what if Harry is actually a decendant of Gryffindor’s? Whouldn’t that be just as good, if not better, in Voldemort’s eyes than a hat or sword? Slytherin’s greatest nemisis would’ve been Gryffindor. What better revenge than to use a living heir as a horcrux? It certainly is a good explnation of why Voldemort was after Harry in the first place. I really kind of hope I’m wrong, because I’m hoping for a better plot twist from JKR but it just works too well in some of my other theories about book 7. Let me know what you guys think. Keep up the great work guys!

  10. penny Says:

Wow Angie. I want you to know I fully intend to respond to this great commenta but I am standing in the Samsung Experience in the middle of NYC now checking e-mail (greg and I came up to NY today) so I don’t have time, but wow. I look forward to responding to this.

  11. Laura Says:

I too originally thought that Voldy must have “used up” a horcrux when he almost died killing Harry; however, JKR has said that that’s not how they work. They don’t get “used up” like a cat’s 9 lives; they simply bind him to existence when he’s at the point of death.

I’m certain of having read that, ’cause it shot down a theory of mine as well. I will post a link when and if I can find it to make it more official, though.

  12. Laura Says:

TRYING to kill Harry, I of course should have said. ;)

  13. Ben Says:

If you think Harry himself is a horcrux, will he do the noble thing of killing himself and allowing someone else to finish off Voldemort? Supposing Harry is the 6th horcrux and it’s not Nagini, who would it be to kill Voldie? OR, could Harry find a way to kill himself and Voldemort at the same time?

  14. Yamil Says:

Angie, your prognostication is great but I dont think that by resurrecting…..oooh wait yeah he had to use one because one most be on your body right? then that leaves 5…..oh and actually did RAB (i say RAB because its not proven that RAB is Regulus Black, only Daniel knows) destroyed the horcrux? well im a little confused thats why im reading the sixth book again….

  15. Anonymous Says:

I loved the interview with your sister, Penny! It was so exciting listening to a new convert. What a great idea to have her on. She sounds like a ‘natural’ too. I hope that you can have her on again as ‘resident - new convert Harry Potter fan’ as time allows, and especially after Book 7 comes out and we’ve all read it.

I have to admit something that will, probably, shock and amaze all who read this. [grin] Everybody seems to have ‘Horcrux Fever.’ LOL But, I Don’t. I find the whole concept Very Boring and have - since the ‘whole idea’ started. I’ve always enjoyed J.K. Rowling’s mysteries in her Harry Potter series but this is one mystery that I have no interest in whatsoever. I suppose revealing this ‘point of view’ on a podcast blog dedicated to horcruxes isn’t in very good taste, it’s just that since we were on the subject, I thought that I’d put in my two cents. I’m, probably, the only Harry Potter fan on the planet that feels this way. Obviously, I’m going to have to ‘get over it’ as Book 7 will likely spend at least *some time* on the ‘holy grail’ to identify and find them. Perhaps, as the urgency builds in Book 7 to find them and destroy them in order to kill Voldemort *permanently* the interest will come - but until then? [yawn] It’s really the only concept in her whole series that I can’t can excited about. Maybe, because there is no ‘danger’ associated with it . . . I really don’t know why. Then again, perhaps, it’s this ‘urgency’ issue. I’m not a big sports fan but when I did watch football games and such, I wasn’t that interested in the games until you got down to the *final* ones that *really counted.* The sense of urgency was very strong in those and the odds were great because you were playing the best teams that had beaten so many others. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

  16. yvaine Says:

Laura: You’re right about the Horcruxes. I’ve read that somewhere, too, I just can’t remember where. But I think we can also deduce that that’s how it works, based on Prof. Dumbledore’s explanations. :)
I’d have to agree that the Invisibility Cloak is unlikely to be a Horcrux, mainly because it’s been in Prof. Dumbledore’s possession for about 10 years or so, before he passed it on to Harry, and he would’ve detected if there was something unusual about the cloak. It was also not a significant object for Voldemort to put a bit of his soul into.

  17. Joye Beth Says:

So, not because I think it’s a particularly great comment, but for the sake of conversation, here’s my myspace comment about the podcast.

“I don’t know if you guys have read this before yourselves, or someone else has already brought it up, but I wanted to talk about the Hufflepuff horcrux. I was reading a book 7 fanfic (and there is also an editorial on mugglenet) that mentioned that Zacharias Smith could be a relative of Hepzibah Smith, and therefore of Helga Hufflepuff. It makes a lot of sense to me, because Zacharias is a Hufflepuff, and it would put into play the Sorting Hat’s advice for inter-house alliances. I think that Hufflepuff’s Cups got back to Zacharias’ family and that Harry will have to look past his arrogance in an attempt to destroy the horcrux.”

And to add to the whole “R.A.B.” thing, I used to be a part of a Harry Potter Message board, aroung the time the sixth book came out, and it was pointed out by members who lived in other countries that in the foreign translations the initials change to match the translation of Regulus’. I thought that might be some added support to that theory.

  18. Leslie Says:

Actually, there are multiple invisibility cloak. There’s a reference to additional ones in OOTP - other members of the Order have them - this comes out when Arthur Weasley is attacked by the snake.

  19. Raffy Says:

I read an excellent analysis on another site about how the Hufflepuff Cup was transfigured into one of the plaques in the Trophy room that has Tom Riddle’s name on it. I think it was the Order of Magical Merit.

The deduction is based on the fact that when Dumbledore recites the list of Riddle’s numerous accomplishments at Hogwarts, he leaves out that award. And that award was mentionned specifically when Ron vomited slugs all over it in Book 2 (?). It would also explain Riddle’s otherwise purposeless visit to Hogwarts to request a job he knew he wouldn’t get.

  20. Greg Says:

    Raffy: that’s pretty interesting!

  21. penny Says:

OK, I am responding to these comments one at a time or else, my brain will expolode. Literally.

Angie- all this horcrux counting is going to make me go mad. While I agree that 2 horcruxes to find makes the task much more attainable, I think we all really need to find out exactly what happened the night of Lily and James’ deaths before we can properly speculate. No one seems to really be clear about what happened to Voldemort that night and whether he actually “died” that night requiring a horcrux to be used to keep him alive (or revive him- whichever). I do agree with you (and Harry I guess) though that 1/7 of Voldemort’s sould continues to be in his body and that will be the final piece Harry has to destroy.

As far as Harry being the “heir of Gryffindor” theory goes. In the back of my mind, I believe JKR has spoken about not wanting to pursue that angle. I think she used up all of the “heirs of the founders” in Chamber of Secrets and doesn’t want to go there any more than in that book. If anyone could find that interview, I’d be grateful.

It would seem that Raffy agrees with you on the Helga Hufflepuff thing and that the theory he read TOTALLY supports my theory that the cup is in the trophy room. Nice one, me.

Laura- I agree with you that horcruxes aren’t just “used up” automatically when Voldemort is killed. Mugglecast actually had a discussion about that this week and they made a good point that if this were the case then Harry would just need to kill Voldemort 7 times and then all the horcruxes would be used up and he would be dead. Not likely.

Ben- good question. I honestly don’t know. I think it would (obviously) be the most difficult decision Harry would ever have to make and would not be taken lightly be him or the people around him. I believe (and hope) that the smarts of Hermione and the strategies of Ron would come into play here to figure a way out of this one (perhaps Harry would only have to destroy a portion of himself- or his physical body to make it work? I don’t know).

Yamil- keep us posted after you finish re-re-re-reading book 6.

Anonymous - I actually sort of agree with you. I have been hesitant to discuss the horcruxes first because it is an overwhelming topic but second because it isn’t too interesting. But alas, it was a necessary evil. Greg has made the point that if the horcruxes are such an important part of the Harry Potter Series, why were they only revealed at the end of Book 6? I sort of agree with that. I am hoping that Book 7 isn’t brought down by the minutae of finding and destroying the horcruxes.

Yvaine- I hear what you are saying about the invisibility cloak but something inside of me is still holding on to the logic behind my theory (and apart from Harry or one of his friends, I think that an object from his parents would be one of the most difficult things to destroy.)

Joye Beth- I am not sure I remember you posting that on the myspace page. Thanks though. As far as the Zacharias/Hepzibah Smith thing, I have heard and read and thought about some theories about this and I think this might be a case of “Mark Evans” Syndrome. If you need clarification, let me know. I do think that fanfiction can provide some of great commentary/theories out there though!

Leslie- thanks for the clarification on the invisibility cloaks.

Raffy- I sort of replied to you in Angie’s part. Basically I think you agree with me. Nicely done. (feel free to refute that- I am only being flippant because I know you personally).

Here is my final thought for all of you to ponder and comment on. We don’t know exactly how to destroy a horcrux, do we? Did we ever find out how Dumbledore’s arm got injured? Do you think you have to (or can) perform an AK (that is an Avada Kedavra for all you non-HP jargon peeps) to destroy a horcrux?!?

  22. Julia Says:

Hi guys, love your podcast. I like the way you get straight to the point, no messing about.

I just wanted to make a comment about this :

“Greg has made the point that if the horcruxes are such an important part of the Harry Potter Series, why were they only revealed at the end of Book 6? I sort of agree with that. I am hoping that Book 7 isn’t brought down by the minutae of finding and destroying the horcruxes.”

The details of the horcruxes may only have been revealed in HBP but this mystery was essential part of the whole series right from the beginning. (why voldemort survived the AK, Riddle’s diary and so on)

Something about JKR’s writing which I love is that you have to keep re-reading the books to find the important information she put in there, which you only realised later. (for example, I believe all the remaining horcruxes will have been mentioned in the earlier books. We’ll just have to be crazy until book seven trying to find them!)

I think the horcruxes will be a large part of book seven, although there are only a few left to find so there will be plenty of time for your interesting theories to be fulfilled!

  23. Penny Says:

Julia- First off, welcome- thanks for the kind words! I hear what you are saying about how at least some, if not all, of the horcruxes have been mentioned throughout the series making it so that the horcruxes COULD truly have been the crux (pun intended) of the series and not just part of the grand finale that is book 6 and 7. Keep these great comments coming! I enjoy being challenged.

  24. Liz Says:

I fullheartedly agree with the Harry is a horcrux theory. It is one of the only things that makes sense to me. Upon hearing the theory I decided to go and look back at the prophecy in book 5. Most of the prophecy seems to also support this theory, but one line in the prophecy could greatly conflict the theory. That line is: “…,but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not…” How could Voldemort quickly make a horcrux out of Harry and not know about it?

On another note I noticed something in the prophecy that I thought was very interesting, but it probably does not have anything to do with anything. “The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies…” I thought it was kind of ironic that as far as I remember the books have said that Voldemort split his soul into seven pieces and Harry is born “as the seventh month dies.” I may be wrong, but I really thought this was worth noting.

  25. sara Says:

what if dumbledore is a horcrux and thats why he was pleading to snape .. so snape could kill him … maybe snape really is good guy …???

  26. Leona Says:

Hi! I’m new to this whole podcast/blog stuff; I’ve enjoyed the 2-3 :progcasts” I’ve heard thus far. Keep up the good work. : )
Just a quick thought about the ring horcrux that Dumbledore destroyed. I don’t think that is what damaged his hand. I think he’s a Phoenix himself, and was nearing the end of his life span (remember, the elixr of Life/Sorcererererrr’s Stone had to be destoyed, he could no longer prolong his life). I agree that Snape & Dumbledore had an arrangement to have Harry witness Dumbledore’s murder….I just think it’s part of a much larger plan by Dumbledore, and that Dumbledore will somehow be re-entering into the story via ‘phoenix power’.

Quick question: Do you think there is a significance to WHY Vold. & Harry “coincidentally” have wands that have tail feathers from the same Phoenix, that phoenix is owned by dumbledore? Esp. when the wand chooses it’s “master”? Just curious if anyone ahd thots on that. Or if it means anything more than what has been simply laid out by JK?

  27. Anonymous Says:

Did you know that the word “hallows” is also used to represent an object of power or importance. A case in point are the Hallows of Ireland which are four legendary objects, the Spear of Lugh, Stone of Fal, the Sword of Light of Nuada, and The Dagda’s Cauldron; simplified to sword, baton, coin and cup. And deathly rather implies a horcrux. Or maybe im reading too much into it.
