Episode #5: Ron and Hermione? Duh!
Since the beginning, Ron and Hermione seem to have been destined to, well, something. Some think these star-crossed lovers have been fated to be together from the start, while others hold out hopes (dreams?) that perhaps Harry or Victor will capture Hermione’s heart. In this episode, we discuss just why Ron and Hermione are meant to be together.
As a reference see my post on the old HPProgs blog, Weasley and Granger in Love. Make sure to read the comments for some classic denial-of-the-obvious H/H shipping.

Great episode, as usual. And thanks for the mention again. You guys really need intro music to start off your show.
So I guess there’s no Halloween edition?

Thanks Aishel. Once again, if you can suggest any good intro music, we would be thrilled to listen to your suggestion. We at Hpprogs the podcast are very open to suggestions from our listeners!
Actually there is a halloween edition. We made it last night. Greg will put it up today. Ye of Little Faith- shame on you…

I believe it was this podcast where the discussion regarding a reason why Dumbledore would have the invisibility cloak. I think the comments revolved around something like Dumbledore had something to hide…I can’t remember all the details. I didn’t hear the Mugglecast podcast so maybe many of these points came out but these are my comments:
So why would Dumbledore have the cloak?
1. Dumbledore would know that both Harry AND Neville would be in danger
2. Harry’s parents were protected by the fidelius charm at Godric Hollow. They would not need the invisibility cloak.
3. We only have Dumbledore’s word that the cloak belonged to James. Did he borrow it from James - was it ever James’?
4. Dumbledore wouldn’t need the cloak - he told Harry in Book 1 he didn’t need the cloak to be invisible so who did he need the cloak for?
Neville - why protect one baby with the fidelius charm and the other with a cloak. That doesn’t make sense
Hagrid - too big
Sirius? Well, that would make the Potter family double safe. Dumbledore thought that Sirius was the secret-keeper and if Sirius was invisible that would be even more protection of the Potters. Except, then, how did Dumbledore get the cloak back? Sirius didn’t send it with Hagrid and Harry, and he got outsmarted by Wormtail the next day or whatever. So, scratch Sirius.
Remus - what phase was the moon in?
McGonagall, Sprout, Flitwick? Nah
Snape?
Snape is a spy - whether good or evil - I suspect good - a invisibility cloak would be cool.
Now, let us remember that Mad Eye Moody (at least the imposter one) could see through an invisibility cloak via his magic eye. This leads me to assume that it would be too unwise for anybody to attempt to use an invisibility cloak to spy on Voldemort directly. If there is a magical way to defeat a cloak, it would be good tactics to assume that Voldemort knows about it.

I have to agree on the “duh!” part - those two seemed obvious from the beginning (well, maybe I didn’t catch it in Book 1 - but by 2 or 3, no doubt).
A related comment on Ron and Hermione: the whole of Book 6 dealt very strongly with the love theme, especially romantic love and its trials: Ron and Hermione, of course. Harry having to weigh friendship against love - which turned out not to be a problem after all, because Ron was a better sport (and friend) than Harry gave him credit for. Tonks overcoming Lupin’s resistance based on his own fears. Fleur having to overcome Bill’s family’s prejudices, by proving herself to be not so shallow after all. Molly and Arthur serving as an example of a long-time successful love match. Luna and Neville possibly starting something. We also saw some screw ups - Ron and Hermione working at cross-purposes and making bad dating choices for the wrong reason, and the Weasley’s being wrong about Fleur, for example.
All in all, this makes me wonder how romantic love will crop up again in Book 7. What role will Ginny, as Harry’s presumptive “true love” play? What role with not just Ron and Hermione, but their relationship itself, play? Is Draco’s relationship with Pansy at all important? Does Percy’s relationship with Penelope - what ever became of that? - still have a role to play? Are there unresolved loves from the past that we don’t know about? Did Snape love someone, and if so, whom, and is it important?
And of course, there’s also the non-romantic love in Book 6. At the beginning of the story, there is, surprisingly, a mission of love, and in the end, the same relationship comes up again: Loathsome as the Malfoys are, Narcissa appears to love her son - enough to break the Dark Lord’s rules and jeopardize other’s lives to protect him. She contrasts with Bellatrix, who “loves” the Dark Lord so much that she thinks her sister should be proud to sacrifice her own son’s (and Bellatrix’s nephew’s) life to the cause. In the great showdown on the tower, we hear Draco’s fears that Voldemort will “kill my family.” Narcissa’s affection is returned, and may have some redemptive power; we’re advised at one point by Dumbledore that the Dark Lord cares for no one, no matter what people like Bellatrix may think. There’s also the contrast of Harry’s influence over Kreature (magical power) vs. his influence over Dobby (eager to help out of affection and gratitude). The Dursley’s are somewhat humanized by their affection for each other, however dysfunctional. Slughorn is somewhat repugnant, but is redeemed by a streak of kindness and having cared for Lily. Even Hagrid’s screwy loyalty to his loathsome pet spider had tangible rewards.
I assume you’ll get around to the love theme - and to Draco, who I think is a VERY interesting character - at some point. (Percy might be interesting, too.)
Great show!!!

I am such a Ron & Hermione junkie! As I tell my friends, as long as those two get together in the end, anything else can happen in HP7!
I wish you had actually talked more about R&H and had more examples. This is such a classic story line and setup. They are Benedict and Beatrice from Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. (”Love me?! Why?”) They are the classic screwball comedy, like Bringing Up Baby. They know it from the beginning and try to ignore it, all the while knowing they won’t be able to for much longer. It’s these moments that get me through the tough parts of Harry’s life….I know SOMEONE will be happy in the end.
I look forward to hearing more. Keep casting!

I love all the movies and sometimes it looks like hermione loves both her friends Ron and Harry but she should choose the guy she loves the most. Ohh and Hermione is the coolest ever. I am Harry Potter crazy.

I love the convosation of Ron and Hermione. I really hope they do get together in the last book, as I’m a huge Ron and Hermione shipper, myself.
I’m hoping for some more talk on Ron and Hermione’s relationship in future podcasts! Please!
As from all the hints and things mentioned in the books and by J.K, I’m pretty sure they do start going out or atleast confess their love for eachother, however, the thing I want to know is how do they say or show it. I can’t wait!
LOVE your shows, by the way! Much Love x x

Oy vey. Sheesh, it is SO obviuos that Ron and Hermione are NOT going out. EVER. 1. At the Yule Ball, Hermione didn’t ask Ron out, did she??? She asked Viktor Krum. 2. She and Ron fight all the time. 3. Has she ever dropped any hints that she wants to go out with Ron? Greg and Penny, if you say I’m a total jerk, I don’t blame you. You guys are so set on your wonderful thery. But in about a month everyone’s gonna look back at the comments and say, “Man, she was right all along.” IN YOUR FACE!!! (hahaha)
